Recap
Dodgers 8, Mariners 3: Jerry Hairston Jr. homered and drove in a career-high five runs in support of Clayton Kershaw as visiting Los Angeles bounced back to even the series after getting no-hit in the opener.
Kershaw (5-3) struck out a season-high 12 while allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings. The reigning Cy Young Award winner snapped a three-start winless streak thanks in part to his first double-digit strikeout effort since last September.
Hairston provided most of the offense as the Dodgers quickly made sure that the no-hit effort would not extend to Saturday. Dee Gordon led off the game with a single and Hairston followed Andre Ethier’s walk with a three-run homer off Jason Vargas to give Los Angeles an early lead.
Hairston added an RBI double in the third and another in the eighth.
Vargas (7-5) took the brunt of the damage for the Mariners, allowing five runs and nine hits in six innings.
Seattle got its only runs in the fourth, when Justin Smoak singled and Kyle Seager drew a walk. Miguel Olivo followed and blasted a three-run homer to left - his fifth.
The Dodgers put the game away with two runs in the ninth on Elian Herrera’s RBI fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly from Juan Rivera.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Two of the relievers involved in Friday’s no-hitter - Lucas Luetge and Stephen Pryor - worked again Saturday and combined for one hitless inning. … Hairston is batting .366 with 15 RBIs in a utility role this season. … Mariners RH Kevin Millwood (groin) had an MRI on Saturday after being forced out of Friday’s no-hitter in the seventh.
