Recap
Angels 2, Diamondbacks 0: Ervin Santana retired the first 20 batters and Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer as host Los Angeles won for the sixth time in eight games.
Santana (4-7) didn’t allow a baserunner until Justin Upton singled with two out in the seventh en route to throwing the 24th one-hitter in Angels’ history. He struck out five and walked Miguel Montero with one out in the ninth before recording the final two outs on fly balls.
Santana outdueled former Angels teammate Joe Saunders while bouncing back from two straight poor efforts which saw him allow seven runs in both starts.
The right-hander crisply moved down the Diamondbacks until Upton laced a clean hit to the left of shortstop Erick Aybar to end Santana’s bid to throw baseball’s third perfect game of the season. Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox tossed one on April 21 and Matt Cain threw a perfecto against the Houston Astros last Wednesday.
Santana threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians last season.
Torii Hunter, who had three hits, singled with one out in the first and scored on Trumbo’s two-out blast to left field off Saunders (4-5). The homer was Trumbo’s 15th of the season.
Saunders was pitching in Anaheim for the first time since the Angels dealt him to the Diamondbacks in the package for pitcher Dan Haren in July 2010. He gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Santana had walked 15 batters in 20 1/3 innings over his previous four starts. … Upton is 7-for-17 over his last four games … Angels infielder Howie Kendrick had three hits for his third multi-hit outing in his last six games. … Arizona’s Aaron Hill was hitless in three at-bats after having multi-hit games in six of his last nine contests.
