Padres 6, Cardinals 4:
Logan Forsythe had a two-run double and Alexi Amarista had a two-RBI triple in a five-run fifth inning as host San Diego beat St. Louis for the second straight night.

Cameron Maybin added a run-scoring single in the eighth as the Padres won for the sixth time in seven games and dealt the Cardinals their fifth defeat in six games.

Despite the loss, St. Louis maintained its one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League's second wild-card spot. Pittsburgh is 2 1/2 games back and Philadelphia and Milwaukee are four behind the Cardinals.

Padres starter Edinson Volquez (10-10) lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six and walking a season high-tying six. Luke Gregerson got the final five outs for his sixth save.

Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright (13-13) lost his third consecutive start, giving up five runs - two earned - on five hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked four.

The Padres won for the 20th time in 26 games at Petco Park by erasing a 2-0 deficit in the fifth, loading the bases on an error and two infield singles before Yonder Alonso walked to force in a run.

Forsythe put San Diego ahead with his two-run double to the gap in left-center before Amarista rifled a triple down the right field line to cap the five-run rally.

St. Louis chipped away with Jon Jay's RBI single in the sixth and David Freese's solo blast in the seventh to pull within 5-4, but Maybin provided an insurance run in the eighth off Edward Mujica, who allowed his first run since July 29.

Cardinals LHP Jaime Garcia is expected to make his next scheduled start despite lasting only three innings Monday night.
