Cardinals 4, Pirates 3:
Matt Holliday drilled a tiebreaking opposite-field homer as visiting St. Louis won the opener of a three-game series.

Holliday led off the sixth with a blast off A.J. Burnett that landed well into the right-field stands and Yadier Molina added a sacrifice fly later in the inning as the Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven games.

Play was delayed by rain for 34 minutes after Molina’s two-out sacrifice fly in the sixth and Jason Motte recorded the last four outs for his 31th save in 37 opportunities as Pittsburgh lost for the sixth time in seven games.

The Cardinals increased their lead for the final wild card spot in the National League to 2 1/2 games over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and three over the Pirates.

Kyle Lohse (14-2) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings to win his eighth consecutive decision.

Clint Barmes had a run-scoring double in the seventh to pull Pittsburgh within 4-3 and the Pirates had two on in the eighth when Motte entered and retired Josh Harrison on an inning-ending grounder. Motte then worked a perfect ninth for his 10th four-out save of the season.

Lohse didn’t allow a hit over the first three innings before Pittsburgh bunched together three consecutive safeties, with Andrew McCutchen’s single driving in the first run. Harrison hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 2-0.

Skip Schumaker doubled into the left-center field gap to get St. Louis on the board in the fifth. He scored on Lohse’s bouncing single up the middle.

Burnett (15-5) allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
