Recap

Cardinals 5, Brewers 4 (10): Allen Craig singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning and host St. Louis salvaged the finale of the three-game series.

Matt Carpenter scored from second base on Craig’s single to right field off Kameron Loe (6-5). Carpenter barely avoided the tag at the plate by Jonathan Lucroy, and the Cardinals moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Los Angeles in the race for the National League's second wild-card spot.

The Brewers forced extra innings in dramatic fashion when Norichika Aoki lined a two-run homer to right field off Jason Motte on a 2-2 count with two outs in the ninth.

Lance Lynn (14-7) worked a scoreless 10th to earn the win for the Cardinals, who won for just the fourth in their last 12 games.

St. Louis jumped on Shaun Marcum for three runs in the first when Matt Holliday belted a two-run blast and Carlos Beltran snapped an 0-for-14 skid with his 29th homer.

Joe Kelly gave up two runs over six innings for St. Louis, which moved ahead 4-1 on Carpenter’s RBI double with two outs in the second.

Jean Segura cut into the Cardinals’ lead in with an RBI single in the fourth, and the Brewers put two runners on in the eighth before Mitchell Boggs induced an inning-ending double play from Lucroy.

Segura had three hits for the Brewers, who failed in their bid to reach .500 for the first time since they were 9-9 on April 24.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals RHP Edward Mujica pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his 18th consecutive scoreless appearance since being traded from Miami. …. Brewers OF Corey Hart left the game with a sprained left ankle, and OF Ryan Braun exited for an undisclosed reason. ….Milwaukee was seeking its first three-game series at Busch Stadium since Oct. 2-4, 2009. …Beltran’s homer was his first since Aug. 10 at Philadelphia.
