Recap

Brewers 4, Cardinals 3: Corey Hart delivered two RBIs and new closer Francisco Rodriguez survived a scary ninth inning as host Milwaukee took the rubber game of the series.

The Brewers capitalized on three Cardinals errors - including two by shortstop Rafael Furcal - in a four-run first inning. Hart opened the scoring with a broken-bat two-run single, giving him six RBIs in the last five games.

St. Louis’ David Freese and Allen Craig homered in the second and third innings, respectively, to cut the deficit to 4-2. For each it was his 14th homer this season.

The Cardinals finished their road trip with a 1-5 mark - their worst stretch since a five-game losing streak on May 29-June 3. They committed five errors in losing the last two games in Milwaukee.

Brewers rookie Tyler Thornburg went 4 2/3 innings in his second major-league start, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks. Former closer John Axford (3-6) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Francisco Rodriguez earned his second save in as many days despite walking in a run in the ninth.

Matt Holliday's 15-game hitting streak ended when he pinch-hit in the ninth and struck out on a ball in the dirt. With the bases loaded and two outs, Freese walked to make it 4-3, but Rodriguez retired Berkman on fly ball to end it.

Milwaukee beat St. Louis for just the seventh time in the last 22 meetings.

Adam Wainwright (7-10) was the hard-luck loser, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in seven innings. He fanned nine and walked none.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Brewers LF Ryan Braun (groin strain) sat out but is expected back Friday when the Brewers open a series in Cincinnati. Surprisingly, Milwaukee is 6-0 this year when Braun doesn’t play. … Freese’s homer was his first since June 14. … St. Louis still leads the season series, 5-4.
