Reds 9, Giants 2: Ryan Ludwick and Brandon Phillips hit home runs and Mat Latos threw seven scoreless innings for his first win with his new team as Cincinnati pounded visiting San Francisco in the opener of a three-game series.
Latos (1-2) allowed four hits and two walks and struck out three in his longest outing with the Reds. The Giants broke up the shutout on Buster Posey's two-run home run in the ninth against Sam LeCure.
Giants starter Matt Cain (1-1) had thrown 18 scoreless innings over his previous two starts, but Phillips ended that streak with a two-run homer in the first.
Ludwick added his solo shot to chase Cain with one out in the seventh, and the Reds erupted for five more runs in the inning against right-hander Dan Otero. Jay Bruce and Scott Rolen connected for back-to-back two-run doubles against Otero.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single in the ninth. Sandoval has hit safely in every game this season. … The Reds honored the national champion University of Kentucky men's basketball team before the game. … The Giants have not been held scoreless this season.
