Royals 7, Rangers 6: Eric Hosmer scored on rookie Mike Olt’s throwing error in the bottom of the 10th to give host Kansas City a walk-off win and help the Royals avoid a three-game sweep.

Billy Butler walked leading off the 10th against left-hander Michael Kirkman (0-2) and was replaced by Hosmer on the bases. Salvador Perez reached on a fielding error by shortstop Alberto Gonzalez and Jeff Francoeur followed with a grounder to third.

Trying to turn the double play, Olt sailed the throw past second base and into right field, allowing Hosmer to cross with the winning run.

Greg Holland (5-3) struck out Olt with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th to finish the frame and earn the win.

The Royals jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first inning but Texas took the lead with a five-run rally in the fourth. Josh Hamilton began the uprising with a double and scored on Adrian Beltre’s single before first baseman Butler’s throwing error opened the floodgates. Elvis Andrus capped the spurt with a two-run triple.

Kansas City chipped away, getting a run back on Francoeur’s solo homer in the bottom of the fourth and cutting it to 5-4 on Butler’s RBIs single in the fifth. The Royals finally regained the lead in the sixth, when Brayan Pena turned on a 1-1 breaking ball from Derek Holland and blasted it down the left field line for a two-run blast.

The Rangers pushed across the tying run in the seventh on Michael Young’s RBI double but left the go-ahead run at third in the frame. They had another strong scoring opportunity thwarted in  the ninth, when Olt was thrown out attempting to steal home as Andrus missed the squeeze.

Olt was making his first career start at third base after playing first in the previous two games. Regular third baseman Beltre served as the DH and went 3-for-4. … Josh Hamilton went 1-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts for the Rangers. He has hit in four straight games. … Gonzalez was in the game for Texas because Andrus had left in the ninth with right shoulder soreness. … Royals LF Alex Gordon got his first day off after appearing in each of Kansas City’s previous 106 games.
