After Max Scherzer departed after striking out nine over eight solid innings, Los Angeles got its offense untracked against Octavio Dotel (5-3) in the ninth. Kendrys Morales stroked a one-out single to center before being replaced for a pinch runner by Peter Bourjos. Erick Aybar's infield single advanced Bourjos, who came around to score from second after Callaspo's base hit found the hole into left field.
Torii Hunter had an RBI single and Morales added a triple and a double for the Angels, who have won 13 of their last 16 contests to pull within two games of Baltimore for the second wild-card spot.
Prince Fielder and Alex Avila belted solo homers for the Tigers, who have dropped three of four to remain one game behind Chicago in the AL Central. The White Sox suffered a 7-5 setback to Kansas City earlier on Friday.
Starting in place of Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana struck out 10 and scattered four hits in 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision. Ernesto Frieri (3-0) struck out two in one scoreless inning to pick up the win.
Scherzer struck out nine to increase his major league-leading total to 213, which is four ahead of teammate Justin Verlander.
