Recap

Pirates 4, Tigers 3:
Andrew McCutchen had his second two-homer game in three days, driving in all four Pittsburgh runs in a win at Detroit.

McCutchen hit a pair of two-run shots against Drew Smyly (1-1), the first with one out in the top of the first inning. After the Tigers tied it in the bottom of the third on a Prince Fielder two-run homer, McCutchen put the Pirates back on top with a one-out blast to right.

A.J. Burnett (2-2) got the win, holding the Tigers to two runs on seven hits in six innings. He finished with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Detroit closed within one in the seventh on a passed ball, but Juan Cruz and Joel Hanrahan preserved the Pirates’ slim lead over the final two innings. Hanrahan worked around a walk in the ninth, striking out two for his ninth save.

Smyly allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two. Three Detroit relievers limited the Pirates to a pair of hits over the final 4 1/3 frames.

GAME NOTEBOOK: McCutchen, who did not have any home runs before May 8, has hit seven in his last 12 games. ... The loss was the first of Smyly’s major league career. ... Tigers pitchers struck out 12 Pirates, their 10th straight game with at least eight strikeouts. ... None of the five American League Central teams has a winning record at home (Detroit is 10-12).
