Recap

Tigers 6, Pirates 0: Justin Verlander fell two outs shy of his third career no-hitter, striking out 12 in a dominating effort against the visiting Pirates.

Verlander (5-1) had little trouble shutting down the lowest-scoring offense in baseball, retiring 18 straight after issuing a base on balls to Neil Walker with one out in the first inning. He struck out the side in the eighth and showed no signs of weakness until Josh Harrison blooped a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a one-out single in the ninth.

Walker and Andrew McCutchen then grounded out to end the game.

Harrison and McCutchen, who walked in the seventh inning, were the only Pittsburgh runners to reach second base.

Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder hit back-to-back RBI doubles against Charlie Morton (2-4). Delmon Young provided further cushion with three RBIs, leading off the fourth with a solo homer and doubling in a pair of runs in the seventh.

Morton allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings for Pittsburgh. He struck out four and walked one.

Don Kelly had a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning for Detroit.

GAME NOTEBOOK
: Verlander’s two no-hitters came against Milwaukee on June 12, 2007 and against Toronto on May 7 of last year ... The only five pitchers with more no-hitters than Verlander are Nolan Ryan (seven), Sandy Koufax (four), Larry Corcoran, Cy Young and Bob Feller (three each).
