Recap

Angels 2, Indians 1:
Dan Haren allowed only one run in eight innings and Torii Hunter homered for the second straight day as the Angels broke a five-game losing streak.

Haren (1-1) gave up four hits and struck out seven and Scott Downs pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save. Downs, just promoted to the closer’s role, has not allowed a run in nine appearances this season and has not allowed a run to the Indians in 11 straight appearances.

The tough-luck loser was Jeanmar Gomez (1-1), who was making his first start since serving a five-game suspension for intentionally hitting Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas with a pitch on April 14. Gomez struck out seven and allowed only five hits and two runs in six innings.

The Angels scored one run in the first on an RBI single by Kendrys Morales and added another in the fourth on Hunter’s second homer. The Indians got their lone run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jack Hannahan.

Game notebook: The start of the game was delayed 2½ hours because of heavy rain in the Cleveland area. . . . The Indians, who hit homers in their first nine games, were homerless for the 10th consecutive game, their longest such stretch since 1983. . . .  Jason Kipnis is 11-for-26 over the last seven games. . . . The Angels have scored two or fewer runs for Haren in four of his five starts.
