White Sox 9, Indians 3: Jose Quintana won his first major league start and three different Chicago hitters homered as the White Sox closed the gap on first-place Cleveland in the American League Central.
Quintana (1-0), called up to fill in for scheduled starter John Danks, limited the Indians to two runs on four hits in six innings of work. He struck out four and walked three while helping the White Sox close to within 2 1/2 games of the division lead.
After Cleveland took a 1-0 lead on a Carlos Santana groundout in the top of the first, Adam Dunn answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to put the White Sox in front to stay. A.J. Pierzynski added a solo shot in the second against Jeanmar Gomez (3-3).
Alejandro De Aza singled home two of Chicago’s three runs in the sixth inning, and Dayan Viciedo hit a two-run homer to follow Pierzynski’s RBI triple during a three-run seventh.
Asdrubal Cabrera singled home a run for Cleveland in the third inning to make it a 3-2 game. Shelley Duncan added a leadoff homer in the ninth.
Alexei Ramirez had an RBI base hit for the White Sox.
Gomez gave up six runs on six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings, striking out three.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Danks was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with soreness in his left shoulder. ... Gomez has lost two consecutive starts against the White Sox, allowing 14 runs in 12 1/3 innings. ... The White Sox have homered in 11 straight games. ... Dunn’s homer was the 380th of his career, moving him past Orlando Cepeda and Tony Perez for 63rd place on the all-time list.
