Nationals 5, Diamondbacks 4: Ian Desmond belted a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning as host Washington snapped a five-game losing skid by topping Arizona.
After Bryce Harper collected his third hit with a double to lead off the ninth inning, J.J. Putz (0-2) appeared to settle down by striking out the next two hitters. Desmond promptly followed and deposited Putz's offering into the seats in left center for his third homer of the season.
Steve Lombardozzi and Harper had RBI doubles and Wilson Ramos added an RBI infield single for the Nationals, who had mustered just seven runs during their five-game skid.
Henry Rodriguez (1-1) was credited with the win after striking out two in one scoreless inning.
Justin Upton homered and scored twice and Miguel Montero had three hits for the Diamondbacks, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
With Washington nursing a 3-2 lead, Paul Goldschmidt leveled the contest by plating Upton with an RBI double to right field in the sixth inning. Ryan Roberts promptly followed with a single to left off starter Edwin Jackson to score Goldschmidt and reclaim the lead for Arizona.
