Phillies 9, Cubs 2: Carlos Ruiz homered in the top of the eighth inning and Philadelphia tacked on six runs in the ninth to pull away for its fourth consecutive victory.

Ruiz, who had scored the Phillies’ first run of the night on a second-inning RBI double by Freddy Galvis, provided the decisive hit when he took a 1-1 pitch from Shawn Camp (2-2) over the left-field wall with one out in the eighth.

The visitors broke it open in the ninth inning when Ty Wigginton singled in a pair of runs and pinch hitter Hector Luna delivered the final blow with a two-out grand slam.

Jose Contreras (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the victory in relief. Antonio Bastardo struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the eighth to hold the lead while the outcome was still in doubt.

Just one day after finally hitting his first home run of the season, Alfonso Soriano gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning with a two-run shot to left against Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick. Shane Victorino plated Kendrick with an infield single in the fifth to tie the game.

Kendrick went six innings, allowing two runs on just three hits. He struck out four without a walk.

Cubs starter Matt Garza gave up two runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking one.
