Recap
Braves 3, Nationals 2: Jason Heyward hit the go-ahead two-run single and Tommy Hanson pitched seven solid innings as visiting Atlanta beat Washington.
Dan Uggla added a run-scoring double as the Braves defeated the Nationals for the first time in five meetings this season.
Hanson (6-4) allowed homers to open the game to Steve Lombardozzi and Bryce Harper before settling down. He struck out six and allowed two runs and six hits without issuing any walks.
Eric O’Flaherty worked out of a jam in the eighth and Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 16th save in 17 opportunities as the Braves won for just the third time in 12 games.
Atlanta trailed 2-1 when it loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Michael Bourn and two walks. Heyward delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field off Gio Gonzalez (7-2) to give the Braves a one-run lead.
Washington threatened in the eighth when Lombardozzi and Harper drew back-to-back walks. But O’Flaherty induced Ryan Zimmerman to ground into a double play and retired Adam LaRoche on a flyout to left.
Gonzalez had a five-game winning streak snapped in allowing three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He defeated the Braves last Sunday when he struck out 10 in seven innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Bourn went 2-for-5 for only his second multi-hit game in the last 15 contests. … Gonzalez lost for the first time since falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 29. … Braves catcher Brian McCann sat out with a bruised left knee suffered during Saturday’s game. His status is day-to-day … Washington added veteran left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez to the roster and he pitched a scoreless eighth inning. The Nationals optioned reliever Ryan Perry to Triple-A Syracuse.
