Recap
Rangers 6, Rays 5: Adrian Beltre homered and had four RBIs and host Texas lit up major league ERA leader David Price en route to its fifth victory in six games.
The red-hot Beltre, who was 3-for-3, drove in the decisive run with a fifth-inning single and added his sixth homer in six games as the Rangers maintained their 5 1/2-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the American League West.
Tampa Bay dropped out of AL wild card position, one-half game behind Oakland and Baltimore.
Texas pounded Price (16-5) for six runs and 10 hits to snap his eight-game winning streak and hand him his first loss since allowing a season-high seven runs while losing to the New York Mets on June 13.
Derek Holland (9-6) allowed five runs - three earned - and six hits in six innings. Alexi Ogando and Mike Adams each had two strikeouts during a scoreless frame and Joe Nathan fanned one in a perfect ninth for his 26th save in 27 opportunities.
Tampa Bay, which has lost three straight games, got on the board first on Evan Longoria’s two-run homer in the first.
Beltre and Nelson Cruz hit back-to-back shots in the second, marking the sixth time this season that Texas players have hit consecutive homers. The Rangers took a 3-2 lead later in the inning on Mike Olt’s RBI groundout.
The Rays tied the contest in the third on a sacrifice fly by B.J. Upton before Texas regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Beltre’s two-run double.
Tampa Bay forged another deadlock in the fifth as Upton hit an RBI triple and scored on a single by Ben Zobrist.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Beltre was named AL Player of the Week earlier Monday after batting .433 with five homers and nine RBIs while also hitting for the cycle last week. … Upton is 8-for-17 against Holland in his career. … Texas activated INF Michael Young off the paternity list and INF Luis Hernandez was designated for assignment to open up the roster spot. … Tampa Bay is 21-12 against AL West teams but has dropped three straight.
