Rays 5, Royals 1:
Jeremy Hellickson pitched seven strong innings and Jeff Keppinger homered as host Tampa Bay cruised to its fifth straight win.

Desmond Jennings doubled in a run and Elliot Johnson and Jose Lobaton each chipped in an RBI single for the Rays, who have won 12 of 14 since Aug. 5 and are 2 1/2 games clear in the American League wild card race. They also moved to within four games of the New York Yankees in the AL East.

Hellickson (8-8) allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out six. The right-hander has allowed one or zero runs in four of his last six starts but had not won at Tropicana Field since May 16 - a span of seven starts.

Rookie left-hander Will Smith (4-5) could not match his counterpart. Tampa Bay got on the board in the second when Sean Rodriguez worked a one-out walk and Lobaton kept the inning alive with a two-out single to left. Johnson followed and sent a line drive to left, scoring Rodriguez.

The Royals got that run back in the third on Alex Gordon’s RBI single but Smith could not keep the Rays off the board, surrendering a leadoff triple to Jennings in the bottom of the frame and allowing him to score on a wild pitch.

Tampa Bay knocked Smith out in a two-run fourth that could have been worse, but Johnson was thrown out at home on a tremendous play. Gordon hit Alcides Escobar with a perfect cutoff throw and Escobar fired a bullet to catcher Salvador Perez, who blocked the plate to keep Johnson from scoring.

Keppinger’s sixth home run in the fifth inning made it a four-run gap.

Kansas City had a three-game win streak come to an end. … Royals SS prospect Christian Colon could miss the rest of the season after taking a foul ball to the face last week. … Tampa Bay DH/1B Luke Scott (oblique) will return to the lineup Tuesday. Evan Longoria, who has been serving as the DH, could start playing third base again soon. … The Rays are a season-high 14 games over .500 (68-54).
