Recap
White Sox 9, Yankees 6: Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to snap a tie as host Chicago struck the final blow in a back-and-forth battle with New York.
Former Yankee Dewayne Wise hit a two-run homer and Gordon Beckham tied it with a solo shot in the sixth for the White Sox, who increased their lead in the American League Central to two games over the idle Detroit Tigers. Adam Dunn added his league-leading 36th homer in the eighth.
New York, which squandered leads of 3-0 and 6-5, had its lead in the AL East trimmed to four games over the Tampa Bay Rays - its lowest point since June 29.
Chicago took the lead with a five-run fifth inning, chasing Yankees starter Freddy Garcia and pounding the bullpen. Wise, who was let go by New York last month to make room for Ichiro Suzuki, got some revenge by slamming a 2-0 pitch into the front row in right-center off Garcia, cutting it to 3-2.
A hit and two walks ended the night for Garcia and Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada and Joba Chamberlain each allowed an inherited runner to score, putting the White Sox on top 5-3.
Derek Jeter, who went 4-for-5, hit a solo homer to kick off a three-run sixth inning which put the Yankees back on top.
But Chamberlain surrendered Beckham’s 12th home run leading off the sixth and Chicago jumped on top again in the seventh. Ramirez came up with one on an two outs and ripped a 3-2 breaking ball from Boone Logan (4-2) into the stands in left.
Brett Myers (2-1) earned the win in relief and Addison Reed picked up his 22nd save with a scoreless ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeter’s four-hit day gave him 3,255 for his career, tied with Hall of Famer Eddie Murray for 12th place on the all-time list. Next up is Willie Mays with 3,283. … A.J. Pierzynski added three hits and an RBI for the White Sox. … Chicago 3B Kevin Youkilis (knee) returned to the lineup and went 1-for-4 after sitting out Sunday. … New York 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) returned to the lineup after missing the last three games.
