Recap

Red Sox 4, Tigers 1:
Clayton Mortensen pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief after replacing injured Josh Beckett and host Boston beat Justin Verlander for the second time this season to win its fourth consecutive game in a rain-shortened contest.

The game was called in the top of the sixth after a one-hour, 45-minute delay. The Tigers had the bases loaded with two out when rain forced the stoppage.

Beckett left with back spasms after walking Miguel Cabrera with the bases loaded in the third inning. Mortensen (1-0) entered and got out of the jam by inducing Prince Fielder to fly out to center.

Mortensen, who was recalled earlier Tuesday from Triple-A Pawtucket, allowed just one hit to pick up the win.

The Red Sox pushed across four runs in the fourth inning against Verlander (11-7), who lost his second consecutive outing.

Boston tied the score on a run-scoring single to right by Pedro Ciriaco. Jacoby Ellsbury drew a bases-loaded walk to give Boston a 2-1 lead and two runs scored when a tapper by Carl Crawford went over the head of Verlander and second baseman Omar Infante missed a barehand attempt to field the ball.

The Tigers have lost five of their last six games.
