Recap

Athletics 3, Orioles 2:
Tommy Milone pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer as host Oakland earned some breathing room in the American League wild card race.

Jonny Gomes added two hits and an RBI for the Athletics, who sit first in the AL wild card race - two games ahead of Baltimore and the New York Yankees. The Orioles had a chance to take over the AL East lead but remain tied with the Yankees, who dropped a 6-4 decision to Tampa Bay earlier on Friday.

Milone (13-10) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out two. The rookie left-hander got plenty of help from his defense, with Oakland turning four double plays.

Baltimore held a 1-0 lead after Manny Machado scored on an error in the third but Cespedes put the Athletics on top in the fourth. The rookie slugger, who was questionable with a sprained right wrist, came up with Gomes on first and lined a first-pitch fastball from Joe Saunders (2-2) over the wall in left for his 19th homer.

Chris Davis tied it with a solo homer in the fifth but Gomes responded in the bottom of the frame, sending a single to left to score Adam Rosales. Two relievers bridged the gap to Grant Balfour, who worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 18th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Oakland RHP Brandon McCarthy, who was hospitalized last week after taking a line drive to the side of the head, visited the clubhouse before the game. … Athletics 3B Brandon Inge underwent shoulder surgery in Detroit on Thursday and will miss the rest of the season. … Baltimore rookie Xavier Avery was thrown out trying to steal second base to end the game.
