Recap

Rookie Paul Goldschmidt hit his first career triple - a two-run, two-out drive in the eighth inning to snap a tie - as the Arizona Diamondbacks clinched their fifth National League West Division title with a 3-1 triumph over the visiting San Francisco Giants on Friday.

The loss put San Francisco, which has lost three of four, five games behind Atlanta in the wild-card race with five remaining.

Ryan Roberts led off the eighth with a double off Matt Cain (12-11) and moved to third on a sacrifice. After an intentional walk to Justin Upton, Javier Lopez came on and retired Miguel Montero before Goldschmidt greeted Sergio Romo and sent the Chase Field crowd into a frenzy.

David Hernandez (5-3) tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Joe Saunders, who yielded one run over seven solid innings.

J.J. Putz worked a scoreless ninth for his franchise-record 23rd consecutive save and 44th in 48 chances this season. Putz surpassed the team mark set by Gregg Olson in 1998.

The Diamondbacks remained one game behind the Brewers for the second-best record in the NL. Milwaukee won the NL Central title Friday.

San Francisco took a 1-0 lead when Orlando Cabrera led off the fifth with his fifth homer of the season. Arizona forged a tie in the seventh when Goldschmidt drew a one-out walk and scored on Chris Young's double.

Arizona's Aaron Hill hit a one-out triple in the first and a two-out double in the sixth, but was stranded both times.
