Recap

Tim Stauffer pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the host San Diego Padres slowed the Arizona Diamondbacks' march to the National League West title with a 2-0 victory Friday.

The Diamondbacks' magic number to clinch the National League West remained at six. They lead the San Francisco Giants by six games.

Stauffer (9-12) gave up two doubles and two infield singles but did not allow a runner past second base. He struck out six batters - five in the first two innings - without a walk before leaving with stiffness in his right arm with two outs in the seventh.

Three relievers combined to preserve the shutout as Heath Bell working the ninth for his 38th save.

San Diego got all its offense in the first when Jesus Guzman singled in a run and scored when Arizona left fielder Gerardo Parra committed an error on Nick Hundley's double.

Arizona starter Wade Miley (3-2) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.

San Diego rookie third baseman James Darnell left the game in the top of the seventh with a strained left shoulder.
