Recap

Hiroki Kuroda came within an out of his third career shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers made the most of two long days by beating the San Diego Padres 4-0 on Saturday night at Petco Field.

The Dodgers snapped a two-game losing streak when Tony Gwynn Jr. blooped a go-ahead single in the 11th inning earlier in the evening in the completion of a suspended game from Friday.

After the Dodgers’ bullpen pitched scoreless ball and allowed only two hits for the final 6 2/3 frames in that one, Kuroda (2-0) completely shut down the Padres in the regularly scheduled game, allowing six hits and two walks before being pulled with runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth.

The Japanese righthander allowed a one-out, fourth-inning single to Orlando Hudson and two singles and a walk in the seventh before getting Chris Denorfia to hit into an inning-ending double play. He stranded Rob Johnson after a one-out double in the eighth before Jonathan Broxton got the final out for his fifth save in as many chances after loading the bases.

The Dodgers got to San Diego starter Dustin Moseley in the first when Gwynn led off with a double and scored one out later on a base hit to left-center by Andre Ethier.

Ethier doubled the lead with his first homer in the fifth, and Matt Kemp singled and scored on a two-base error by Denorfia in left field later in the inning. Casey Blake singled home Gwynn in the eighth.
