Recap

Edwin Jackson pitched into the seventh inning for his third straight win, Yadier Molina hit a two-run double and the St. Louis Cardinals kept pace in the National League wild card race with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

Allen Craig had an RBI double for St. Louis, which has won seven of eight and remains 4 1/2 games back of Atlanta. The Braves beat the Marlins 4-1 on Wednesday. The Cardinals are 5 1/2 behind the Brewers in the NL Central. Milwaukee lost to Colorado 6-2 on Wednesday.

The loss extends the Pirates’ North American professional sports record to 19 straight losing seasons. Pittsburgh was in a three-way tie for first place in the NL Central in late July, but has gone 15-35 since then.

Jackson (5-2) improved to 4-0 in five-career starts against the Pirates and continues to be the Cardinals’ best pitcher down the stretch. He entered the day with a team-best 3.39 ERA in six starts since being acquired from Toronto at the end of July.

Marc Rzepczynski, who was acquired in the same deal, bailed out Jackson when he struck out pinch-hitter Josh Harrison with the tying run on third in the seventh. Jason Motte earned his fifth save in seven chances.

St. Louis snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth. With runners on the corners, Molina drilled a first-pitch fastball from Charlie Morton (9-10) for an opposite field, two-run double off the base of the right field scoreboard.

St. Louis lost leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal to a strained left knee in the fifth inning.
