Recap
Edgar Renteria went 2-for-4 and doubled in a pair of runs to highlight a three-run rally and spark Cincinnati to an 11-2 rout over Atlanta on Saturday at the Great American Ballpark.
Renteria, who entered the game when shortstop Zack Cozart hyperextended his elbow while trying to make a tag in the fourth inning, was one of five consecutive Reds to reach base in the sixth inning against Atlanta starter and loser Derek Lowe (6-8), who entered the inning with a one-hitter. Renteria doubled into shallow left to drive in two runs and give the Reds their first lead. Renteria, who was sick and not supposed to play, added an RBI single in the seventh when the Reds broke the game open with a seven-run rally.
The winning pitcher was Homer Bailey (5-4), who allowed only two runs and five hits in six innings. Bailey’s effort was a testament to determination; he had thrown 50 pitches after two innings and didn’t retire the Braves in order until his last inning.
