Recap

A day after recording a no-hitter, the Los Angeles Angels just missed another baseball rarity when Mark Trumbo drove in five runs and fell a single short of the cycle in a 12-7 victory over the host Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon.

Howie Kendrick recorded two hits and two RBIs and scored three runs as part of a 17-hit attack for the Angels, who have won seven of their last nine.

After totaling seven runs in taking two of three from the Cleveland Indians earlier in the week, Los Angeles got its lineup working against Brad Penny (7-8). Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the second that was held up upon review and sparked a four-run rally in the fourth with an RBI triple.

The Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Angels put it away with another rally in the seventh, getting two-run hits from Kendrick and Trumbo in the five-run frame.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 22nd homer for Detroit.

Bobby Cassevah (1-0) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Angels.
