Recap

Francisco Cervelli and Brett Gardner hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to power the New York Yankees to their sixth consecutive victory, 5-3 over the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

Jorge Posada also homered and scored twice as the Yankees overcame miserable weather conditions to maintain a 2 1/2-game lead over Boston atop the American League East.

The start of the game was delayed by rain for 4 hours, 3 minutes - the longest in the majors this year - and didn't get under way until 11:08 p.m. ET.

Cervelli's third homer in four games snapped a 3-3 deadlock in the seventh. A fan reached over the railing and dropped the ball, but the umpires ruled it a homer before and after a video review.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera secured his 39th save and 598th of his career, putting him within three of tying Trevor Hoffman’s all-time record.

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters belted his sixth homer in 15 games, a two-run shot in the sixth off Yankees starter Phil Hughes. Wieters has 17 RBIs in the 15 games.

Hughes (5-5) struck out five and yielded two runs on five hits to help New York improve to 13-3 on the year against Baltimore.

Tommy Hunter (3-3) was charged with five runs - four earned - in 6 2/3 innings.
