Recap

Russell Martin belted a pair of home runs as the New York Yankees routed the slumping Boston Red Sox 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Martin, the lone free agent the Yankees (5-3) were able to snake from the Red Sox in the offseason, collected all four of his RBIs on long balls as New York bounced back from a 9-6 defeat a day earlier.

Ivan Nova gave up four earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for New York, while David Robertson (1-0) picked up his first win by tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Martin's three-run shot in the fourth knocked Boston starter Clay Buchholz (0-2) out of the game. A day after the AL East-favorite Red Sox (1-7) finally won their first game, Buchholz allowed five runs – four earned – on eight hits with three walks in 3 2/3 innings.

The Yankees then hit three home runs off the bullpen, pumping up their major-league leading total to 18 in a game they never trailed. The Bombers finished with 13 hits, including three each from Robinson Cano and Eric Chavez in his first big-league start since May 20, 2010.

The heart of Boston’s lineup combined for just one hit, and the Sox went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
