Recap
Brian Matusz threw seven shutout innings to propel the Baltimore Orioles over the Boston Red Sox 6-1 at Fenway Park on Sunday.
Matusz (3-9) turned in his best outing of the season, allowing only two hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Baltimore got on the board in the fourth inning when Nick Markakis scored on a wild pitch by Boston starter John Lackey. Scott Moore added an RBI single later in the frame to make it 2-0.
The scoreboard remained untouched until the eighth, when Julio Lugo scored on an error by Marco Scutaro and Adam Jones followed with a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-0 and knocking Lackey out of the game.
Lackey went 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on eight hits and one walk. He struck out seven but saw his record drop to 9-4.
Baltimore put the game out of reach in the 9th when Lugo’s triple scored one and Markakis followed with a single to make it 6-0.
Kevin Youkilis hit a solo home run in the ninth to account for Boston’s lone run.
