Recap

Josh Willingham hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning, leading the Washington Nationals to a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Sunday.

Willingham drove a 2-1 fastball from Cla Meredith (0-2) to left-center field for his eighth home run of the season.  Meredith entered after closer Alfredo Simon left with an injury after retiring the leadoff man.

Willingham’s second homer in as many games helped the Nationals overcome Matt Capps' first blown save of the season. Doug Slaten (2-0) threw a perfect 10th for the win.

The Nationals carried a 3-1 lead into the ninth on the strength of Roger Bernadina’s three-run triple in the first and a strong outing by John Lannan.

But the Orioles rallied against Capps, who had converted all 16 of his save opportunities to date.  The major league saves leader allowed a one-out single to Luke Scott, followed by a double to Adam Jones. Matt Wieters then drove in a run with a groundout, and Julio Lugo tied it by smacking a 2-2 fastball to center field.

Capps’ first hiccup spoiled a solid start from Lannan, who allowed just one run and two hits in 5 1/3 innings. He is winless in his last seven starts.

The Orioles’ comeback did however spare Kevin Millwood from another excruciating loss. Millwood entered the game with the lowest ERA of any winless starter in baseball and allowed three runs and eight hits in six 6 1/3 innings.

Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Miguel Tejada.  Bernadina answered the following frame with his triple.
