Recap: Argonauts 31, Alouettes 5

Argonauts 31, Alouettes 5: Ricky Ray connected with running back Steve Slaton for two touchdowns to lead visiting Toronto over listless Montreal.

Ray completed 19-of-33 passes for 186 yards while Slaton recorded 100 combined yards for the Argonauts (2-4), who snapped their three-game losing streak. Jamie Robinson returned an interception for a touchdown while Jermaine Gabriel and Aston Whiteside recorded sacks.

Montreal (1-4) split quarterback duties between Troy Smith and Alex Brink, but its offence continued to sputter as it finished with 167 total yards. Sean Whyte accounted for all of the Alouettes’ points with a field goal and two singles.

Ray put the Argonauts ahead with a 10-yard TD toss to Slaton with 44 seconds remaining in the first half. Slaton ran for 24 yards on Toronto’s first drive of the third quarter before scoring his second touchdown 2:57 into the quarter on a 5-yard pass from Ray.

Montreal conceded a pair of safeties after failing to gain first downs in the fourth quarter, increasing the Argonauts’ advantage to 21-5. Swayze Waters kicked a 42-yard field goal with 1:45 remaining in the contest and Robinson picked off Brink on the following play and returned it 46 yards to put the game out of reach.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Umpire Ben Major was hit in the face by an errant cleat in the first half and left the game. He received 11 stitches but returned at the start of the third quarter with bandages circling his left eye. … Ray lost another receiving target when rookie RB Anthony Coombs left the game in the third quarter with an apparent left arm injury, while Montreal T Josh Bourke limped off the field after falling awkwardly in the fourth. … The Alouettes have not scored a touchdown since the fourth quarter of Week 3.
