The Ottawa Senators added at last year’s trade deadline and then again in the offseason in preparation for a playoff run this season. However, the Sens got off to a slow start and were never able to recover.

The Buffalo Sabres also find themselves in a similar position after missing the playoffs by a single point last season. They too are searching for answers in what has become a lost season for the club.

Ottawa is coming off a 5-3 win against the Oilers in which it was outshot 36-16, and Jakob Chychrun scored twice in the Senators win.

Chychrun was one of Ottawa’s main additions at last year’s trade deadline, although his name was once again in rumors this year. Still, he’s been a solid contributor for the Senators both in terms of points and shots on goal.

The left-handed defenseman has 34 points and 182 shots on goal in 70 games this season. He’s been a one-man shooting gallery in March with 46 shots in 13 games (3.54 per).

Chychrun’s shots on goal line has fairly consistently been set at 2.5. He’s gone Over 2.5 shots on goal in eight of his last nine games and in 12 of 13 contests this month. Dating back to February 15, Chychrun has gone Over 2.5 shots in 15 of 21 games.

We’re getting odds of -115 (53.5% implied probability) for Chychrun to do something that he’s done consistently over the past month. It may not be a bad idea to go up the ladder as Chychrun had at least four shots in 10 of his last 21 games.

The Senators may have been outplayed by the Oilers but they’ve been able to keep up with some comparable teams in recent weeks. On the flip side, Buffalo has the second-worst expected goals share in the last 10 games at 5-on-5, per Natural Stat Trick.

This is the fourth and final meeting between these Atlantic Division foes. All three games have had at least six goals and tonight should be no different.
