big loss for the Red Wings BUT NOT unexpected. I think he's been eager to get his family back to Sweden for a number of years.
alos pretty much agree with bk_widows ex that my personal all time fav defensman is Larry Robinson right after Bobby Orr and I would rate Paul Coffey ahead of all but Orr, Robinson, and Dennis Potvin (never saw Doug Harvey play).

think you can add Scott Niedermayer, Brian Leetch and Rob Blake too.

big bird was a beast...
coffey was susceptible on the defensive side especially in the physical game but he was so smooth on skates he made warm knives look embarrassed cutting thru butter...

48 goals in '85-'86. Gretzky with 52 goals and 163 assists.
Every box score was "Gretzky from Kurri and Messier. Anderson from Gretzky and Coffey. Messier from Anderson and Kurri. Kurri from Coffey and Gretzky."
It was just sick. Kurri had 68 goals. Anderson 54. Messier 35. Four players on the team had over 100 points.

I think it was more the EQUIPMENT back then. goalies were still wearing a glorified first baseman's mit for a trapper. the blocker was smaller, the pads were heavy as hell and the chest protector didn't look like a suit of medieval armor.
watched a bit before game one on NHL network where Jermey Roenik was demonstration what the Devils need to do to beat Quick. that little shit Darren Pang was in goal with a stick, blocker and trapper. the freeking trapper looked like a STEAM SHOVEL and the blocker was HALF WAY up his ARM!!! the trapper is at LEAST three times BIGGER than in Grant Fuhr, John Davidson or Tommy Barrasso's day AND its also half BLOCKER above the wrist area.
THAT'S the reason there is very limited SCORING in today's game compared to the "Golden Age of Scoring" of the mid 80's thru early 90's

bourque belongs in the discussion...
no bias here but in saying that i recognized the fact that orr and shore won stanley cups in boston while bourque could not help get his team over the top...
not sure this is entirely fair either but ray in my estimation lost some lustre by leaving boston in somewhat of an opportunistic fashion (even though harry sinden admittedly wanted him to have a final shot at a title)...
anyway...
definitely ahead of blake, leetch and niedermayer in my book...i'll say this much: if it was a top-11 list, ray would be on it...

I don't know about "definitely ahead of niedermayer" just check his Wikipedia page. just the statement that "(Scott) Niedermayer is the only player to win every major North American and international championship in his career" is pretty strong.

I will give you Ray Bourque over the other two but NOT Scott Niedermayer. in fact, after reviewing (and remembering what a LEADER the guy was on EVERY team he played for), I would put him in the top 5 all time
