WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SOX / YANKS RIVALRY, THIS NL EAST BATTLE HAS HEATED UP RECENTLY AND MIGHT BE THE NEXT BEST ONE IN BASEBALL. WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR. IN SHORT, THERE WAS A COLLASLE COLLAPSE BY THE METS TO HAVE THE NL EAST TAKEN FROM THEM ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON AND J. ROLLINS MADE SOME STATEMENTS WITH HIS MOUTH AND HIS GAME.
THERE'S NO QUESTION THE METS WANT TO GET THIS BAD TASTE OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS. THEY COME IN LOSERS OF 8 IN A ROW OVERALL TO PHILLY AND 6 IN A ROW AT HOME.
TO MAKE MATTERS EVEN MORE SIGNIFICANT, IT'S THE LAST HOME OPENER EVER TO BE PLAYED AT SHEA STADIUM.
45 YEAR OLD J. MOYER WILL BE PITCHING FOR THE PHILS. HE LASTED ONLY 3.2 INNINGS IN HIS FIRST START OF THE SEASON AGAINST THE NATIONALS. HE GAVE UP 9 HITS AND 6 RUNS (3 EARNED) BEFORE BEING PULLED. YOU HAVE TO WONDER HOW MUCH HE HAS LEFT IN THE TANK. THE PHILLIES ARE 1-5 IN MOYER'S LAST 5 ROAD STARTS.
LEFT HANDED PITCHER O. PEREZ GOES FOR THE METS. THE PHILS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH SOUTHPAWS IN RECENT YEARS. THEY'RE ON A CURRENT 0-5 RUN AGAINST LEFT HANDED STARTERS.
THE METS HAD A DAY OFF TO REST AND THINK ABOUT LAST YEAR. THEY'LL GET IT DONE TODAY AND TAKE THE FIRST OF MANY HEATED BATTLES THIS SEASON.

The teams combine to average 10 runs a game. The over under line is 9.5. The bats will be hot in this one for the Mets, and the Phils will chime in with their usual 5 runs, making this game soar over th total as the Mets don't want to disappoint fans in their home opener.

Stylistic, I'm a big fan of yours on the NBA, but your prediction regarding MLB doesn't make me ready to jump out and back you. Like you, I'm a rookie (for 10 years now) and would like to work with you. If you're interested, send me an e-mail.... geotrader@yahoo.com.

Taking the Phils here as they have dominated the Mets for 6 or 7 games straight now and I really don't see how Oliver Perez is favored vs. the veteran Jamie Moyer. Phils have always produced a lot of runs with Moyer on the plate mainly because he's a likeable guy. Moyer does sometime give up a lot of runs, but Phils usually produced enough for him to win it. Basically, both pitchers are the same - either or both can have a really bad game or a really good game. So value here is on the Phils +135.

I don't agree with you on this one - why? because the Mets are 0-3 last year when O. Perez pitches for them against the Phils.

I tail my husband, CK, as i am the first to admit that I don't know the slightest thing about baseball. We were riding the Tigers, and that got us off to a bad start, but other than that and the blown save by the D-Backs against the Reds, I would have to say that the results have been pretty damn good actually. Take away those Tigers losses and the blown save (Dan Haren absolutely dominated the Reds until the bullpen gave it away) and the record is actually sterling.

Last year was last year, Oliver has looked good all through spring training and in his first start against the Marlins. Moyer got shelled in his first start of the year only going 3.2 innings, giving up 6 runs but only 3 of them were earned at home against the Nationals. I just don't know how the Phillies had Oliver's number last year because no one is really batting well against him in their careers. But the crowd will be rocking for the home opener, a lot of expectations on these Mets this year, home team comes out on top when this one is done. Mets, ML.
