Wells to Throw a Better Game Than Last Sunday, and Shut Down Pirates to Regain Control.
Pittsburgh @ Chicago Cubs The Pick: Chicago Cubs -220 (Use as Hedger) The Pick: Under 8.5 (Estimated Line)
Wow Chicago has dug themselves a little bit of a hole, and now are trying desperately to get out of it. After being swept at home by the former world series the Phillies, Chicago will try and find new light with Randy Wells on the mound tomorrow. After injury complications and a devastating home series I think Chicago will finally figure some things out. and try to take this Pittsburgh series in their favor. We all know they need every game they can get, after being 4.5 games behind on the wild card race. Luckily Chicago has had the Pirates number, not only this season, but for the past few seasons, and especially playing at home. Chicago Cubs are 26-13 (+6.0 Units) against Pittsburgh over the last 3 season, 4-2 this season, and not to mention that 5 of the 6 previous games have gone under the total. Now, those stats are all fine and dandy but let's not get carried away now.The Cubs, who have lost seven of eight are currently enduring their longest losing streak since dropping eight in a row from May 17-25. Tomorrow Chicago hopes to get some offensive power from Aramis Ramirez, who is able to return after missing the last four games with shoulder soreness. Ramirez is batting .317 with nine homers and 33 RBIs in 43 games. I wouldn't be totally dependent on his ability to bat tomorrow though, most of the time when someone comes back from the DL they'll need a little adjustment period. Chicago is 4-2 against Pittsburgh this year and 9-3 versus the Pirates at Wrigley since the start of the 2008 season. Ryan Theriot, who drove in his career-high 46th RBI on Thursday, is 11 for 22 with four RBIs against the Pirates this season. The Cubs also roughed up Pittsburgh's scheduled starter Charlie Morton (2-5, 3.81 ERA) when he took the loss in his only appearance against them Aug. 13, 2008, while with Atlanta. Morton allowed four runs and walked four in 2 1/3 innings of a 10-2 loss to Chicago. Morton has struggled, and will try to avoid losing his fourth straight start despite allowing one run and seven hits in five innings of a 5-3 loss to St. Louis on Saturday. There is however some bad news, dependent on how you look at it. Randy Wells (8-5, 3.01), who's coming off the worst outing of his career is going to try and shake off the loss and take care of the Pirates, but since it was his worst outing he can't do any worse tomorrow right? Whatever, Fuck balls.... anyway. Randy lost for the first time since July 12, giving up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings of an 11-5 loss at Colorado on Sunday Pittsburgh, 18-41 away from home, hasn't won a road series since taking three of four from Washington on May 18-21. Will things shape up for Pittsburgh tomorrow? in all likeliness the answer is negotory.... that's right I typed it, but don't expect a offensively struggling Chicago Cubs to cover any sort of runline either you greedy gamblin bitch, It would be a good play if it hit, but certainly not a safe or smart investment play. Look for Chicago to keep this one low, and win this first game against the butt pirates, this is the only early game tomorrow, so after you make money take a nap, and then wake up and win more money. Shoot-out in Florida, Two Hitting Teams, One Winner Then it's All Over.
Colorado @ Florida The Pick: Over 8
It's nobody's secret that both Florida and Colorado can hit. So whats with the 8 point total? Well that's becaise of Johnson's start. See, the books expect that since someone as solid as Johnson is pitching this should be a low scoring game, I have reason to believe otherwise. Johnson (11-2, 2.92 ERA) has also played a key role in Florida's success, leading the club in wins, ERA, innings (154) and strikeouts (129). His last six starts at Land Shark Stadium have resulted in wins, as he's gone 3-0 with a 3.08 ERA. He's 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in two starts against the Rockies, beating them May 9 by allowing one run in eight innings of a 3-1 victory as the Marlins took the first two games of that series before falling 3-2 a day later. So okay, we established that Johnson is a good pitcher, but let's not forget that Florida is averaging 6.5 runs a game! They are hitting like nobodies business and especially at home, did I mention that the Florida and Houston series was over every game? The Marlins have collected at least 10 hits in a club-record 10 games in a row. They connected for 11, including two homers in Thursday's 9-2 win over Houston to take three of four after sweeping a three-game road set from the Phillies last weekend. So now your scratching your head... well stop, your getting that gel stuff everywhere... listen, I know what your thinking and I'm about to clarify why Florida is NOT the play. historically speaking Florida hasn't faired well agains Colorado. Hanley Ramirez, the NL batting leader at .353, has hit .194 with one homer and three RBIs in 10 home games against Colorado... Not so hot huh? Well, whatever it doesn't matter, it doesn't change the fact that he's going to get on the feild tomorrow with a .457 average, one homer and 12 RBIs in the last nine games overall. The Rockies, who are also five games behind NL West-leading Los Angeles, are looking to win for the fifth time in six games after beating Pittsburgh 10-1 to take the last two games of that three-game set. Their answer to Rameriz, simple a second basemen by the name of Clint Barnes. Barnes has collected six hits with a homer and five RBIs in the last two games, while shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is batting .529 with three homers and nine RBIs over the last four. Alright offense is offense, so who's Colorado have starting? Well, see that's the tricky part. Jason Hammel isn't exactly the most consistent pitcher; the right-hander allowed three runs and a career-high 11 hits in five innings of an 11-5 win over Chicago on Sunday. That performance came five days after he surrendered three runs and nine hits before getting pulled with two outs in the seventh during an 8-3 win at Philadelphia. He'd been 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA in six prior outings. He lost his only start against Florida on May 8, yielding six runs and eight hits, including homers to Hanley Ramirez and John Baker in 4 1/3 innings of an 8-3 defeat. If you seriously wanted to make a play it would be on Colorado, but game one is the wrong time to do it. especially after a little traveling. No sides, take the shoot-out projection.

So Philadelphia has been pretty hot lately huh? Nice little sweep of the Cubs put them far ahead with Florida in second place trying to catch up. But take a closer look at this. Did the Phillies sweep the Cubs because they were bomb-shit? Or did they sweep the Cubs, because the Cubs all of a sudden couldn't hit due to their injuries? So how much credit should we give a team that took advantage of a ball club that was on its knees? I strongly think that within the next three days the orders of at least second and third place are going to change. Florida will start a series with Colorado, a team which have given them some problems, and Atlanta.... well, let's talk Atlanta. Can you say on fire? The Braves have won five straight and seven of eight. They are outscoring their opponents llike crazy. Adam LaRoche, acquired from Boston on July 31, has played a large role in Atlanta's recent success. He has a reputation for picking up his play after the All-Star break, and he's living up to it in his second stint with these motherfucking red hot Braves. How Hot are they you ask? Hotter than that one time you decided you were hungry, and tried to make microwaveables but left the aluminum foil on the plate, and the microwave exploded... yeah.. that's right.. You know it happened... Don't lie to me, I can't see you anyway... The Braves' 17-9 record since the All-Star break, it is the best in the NL, and they're six games over .500 for the first time since finishing 84-78 two years ago. This isn't a fluke, like that little Washington magic trick.. What about LaRoche's work efforts... well... In 10 games with Atlanta, LaRoche is batting .371 with three homers and seven RBIs. He has a career .295 average after the All-Star break compared to .252 before the break. So Atlanta will come out guarding home field, they will next face Joe Blanton (7-6, 4.02 ERA), who's next in Philadelphia's rotation. He has not received a run to work with over his last two starts, losing both despite posting a 3.29 ERA. Blanton is 3-3 with a 2.28 ERA over his last eight outings. The veteran right-hander gave up three runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 3-2 loss to Florida last Friday. And in case you were wondering yes, they got swept there... why? because Florida can hit... and well, Phillies can't deal with teams that can hit... now ask yourself... can Atlanta hit? Okay motherfucker have you been reading this or what? Blanton is 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in four starts versus the Braves, on the other hand, Jurrjens has not allowed an earned run in winning two starts against the Phillies this season, helping the Braves take seven of nine meetings. Take Atlanta, a brave, and solid play.
