I would consider trading Gonchar or Staal
I would trade Malkin before Jordan Staal although BOTH, plus (obviously) Sidney Crosby, need to stay in Pittsburgh. as for Gonchar, I think he's getting a bit "long in the tooth" and a UFA making 5.5 million. looked "run out" against the Habs and just couldn't keep up.
you want to "free up some cap space" AND get rid of some "no loads" (US Navy Aviation term for someone who's useless) I would try to dump Kunitz 7.8 million for the next two years and I sure as hell wouldn't offer either new contracts to either Ponikarovsky or Fedotenko, who are both UFA's. we don't need any "Invisable Russians". same with UFA defensman Mark Eaton. he looks lost half the time when he's on the ice. BOTH Ben Lovejoy and Deryk Engelland, who played most of the season in Wilkes-Barre, are better than Eaton.
Ray Shero needs to look for defensive D-men to pair with Alex Goligoski and Kris LeTang (Lovejoy and Endelland might work out) AND a couple of "big body with skills" power forwards that aren't afraid to "get in the shit" in front of the net, to play with Sid and Geno.
Oh, and Flower REALLY needs to improve his positioning over the summer. half the goals scored by both the Senators and Habs were because he was off his angle and or too deep in his net. he trys to get by on "athletic ability" alone

I would consider trading Gonchar or Staal
Can't trade Gonchar, he's a free agent.
And probably going to cost too much to keep and been injury prone the last couple years.
What would Trading Staal get? Are you thinking of something along the lines of a defense? Can't see Staal being traded for anything less than a top defensemen.

thing about trading Jordan Staal for a "top defenseman" is it would probably WEAKEN the overall defense. he's one of the top "defensive forwards" IN the LEAGUE!!!
D was a problem in this years playoffs BUT the MAIN Penguins weakness is a lack of "power forwards" to go with Crosby, Malkin and Staal.

Yes, I have been saying this for a couple months, even before the playoffs started... Malkin deserves his own team, it would start a great rivalry when and if Malkin were traded and his team were to play either Pittsburgh or Washington due to the superstar match up.
Possible trades
Malkin to Edmonton
Jordan Eberle and their 1st round number 1 pick to Pittsburgh
Malkin to Tampa Bay
Vincent Lecavalier and their 1st round pick to Pittsburgh

You need to be a GM. Those are some nice offers.
