First post on a season long thread on NHL betting.
I did a deep dive on the compressed NHL 2021 schedule. I love betting against teams on the second half of a back to back, especially if they are playing their third games in four nights. However, most of the back to backs are against the same team, without travel, sort of like baseball. NY will roll into Philly and play two games. Every team will do this multiple times, so their is not much point when two teams are both on a B2B.
Having said that, I have found thirty instances in the 2021 NHL sked where only one team is on a BTB, and unless other wise indicated all teams on a b2b are also on a 3 in 4. In most cases the opponent also has the day before and after the game off. The team in the favorable situation is listed in CAPS.
A sign of the times is that their is only one instance in the entire schedule of a team playing three different teams in four nights, something that was common in the before times.
I'm not saying that any of these games are a lock, but they may be worth a look.

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out...they just announced that the Maple Leafs & Ottawa Sens can play their home games in their arenas this season..going to be weird only with the Canadian teams playing against other Canadian teams..no teams from the US

Tough to make a call on opening night. Not much to go on, especially with virtually no training camp.
Montreal +120 1 unit Opening night rivalry game. Also Montreal had a much better off season.
Chicago +215 .5 unit Big longshot. TBay clearly the better team, but with the short offseason they may be experiencing a champions hangover.
Edm -145 Gotta think the Oilers have a bit of a chip on their shoulder after being ousted by Chicago in the play in round. Canucks questionable after losing Markstrom and Toffoli.

Well that was less than optimal as I posted an 0 fer 3 for -2.95 units with Edm, Mont, and the longshot Hawks. Lucky for me my golden sombrero is at the cleaners. No crying here though, as I haven't shed a tear since the McRib left town.
Biggest takeaway from opening night: Even with a shortened season it looks like it is going to be a looong year in Chi-town.
On to Thursday.
EDM over van -1.25 2 units. Going back to the well here with two evenly matched teams with the Oil looking for a split on a B2B.
CAR -1.5 vs det +1.35 1 unit Looks like a mismatch on paper, lets hope it looks the same on the ice.

I think the nhl will see an uptick in "go to OT" this year. Basically teams are playing two gm sets with 4 pts at stake. Im gonna target the 2nd gm of each set if the first ends in reg. We will see how this goes...(Ive never been accused of being smart).

Nice to get on the right side of the ledger with a 3-0 night.
Takeaway from Thursday: The Detroit Red Wings were absolutely shelled on the shot clock, 43-14. 57+ minutes into the game they were only down 1-0 to a solid Carolina offense. Keep an eye on Motown as they could become a very solid under bet.
FRIDAY PICKS:
Leafs -1.5 +120 1 unit Ott has lots of new faces and it will take time for them to gel. Opening night for Ottawa, game 2 for Leafs.
TBay -1.5 -115 1 unit I see no reason to think that the result will be any different than opening night. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Fridays takeaway: Pure speculation, but it seems to me that if you see a lot of penalties on the front end of a B2B you can expect payback on the back end which should result in more power play opportunities, theoretically making an over bet more appealing.
SATURDAY PICK: Early Bird Special
Going to put a half unit on NJ @ +1.65
After the B's won the opener in a SO I like the Devils to get even at this price on a matinee game.

Both teams will be starting their backup goalies, though who the backup is in Chicago is an open question. When called upon last year Driedger played extremely well. His stats were actually better than Bobrovsky, though that isn't saying much.

Ottawa loses, so the premise is 0-1. Next up is NJ@pitt on Feb 2nd, then a game on Feb 11th. After that things will start to heat up with an increasing number of these games as the season goes on. Also more weight should be given to games later in the season as the cumulative wear and tear should magnify the b2b effect to a greater degree than early in the season.
In addition, I suspect we will see a few more of these added to the schedule given that games already cancelled will need to be rescheduled.

My 0 and 6 slide continues. I was already resigned to losing last nights bet, but it was a poignant indictment on my current state of affairs that the dagger came on a three on five shorthanded goal in which the goalie drew an assist. D'oh!
