Whats the story with these guys? Is there anyone that can throw? David "#1 in your encyclopedia" Aardsma is closing, I see he went 38/42 in saves, I cant argue with that. Only other names I recognize are League, Vargas, and Olsen. Vargas & Olsen, I wouldnt want these assclowns pitching on my recreational mens league team. As for Ol' 4 eyes Brandon League, great goggles, but he's never really reached his potential, mabye a fresh start in Seattle will be good for him. But back to the original question, who are these other guys, and are any of them good pitchers??

Yeah good points, you convinced me. Nobody knows anything about these guys?? I guess they will be crossing their fingers that the starters can go 8 strong, if not 9?!

D. Aardsma had a career year last season. He was in Boston the year before and was horrible. He has basically 2 pitches, a 95 mph heater and a change up. Lowe throws hard but has control issues. Vargas (LH) has been around for a while. I think he is a former Marlin prospect. Another one who had a career year. Olson was in Baltimore for 3 0r 4 seasons and he sucks. Average stuff at best, but he is LH, so he still has a job. The last guy on your list, never heard of him?The rest are journeyman relievers. I really don't understand all the love for this team. They don't have a legitimate catcher, they replaced Branyan's 32 dingers with Kotchman and Garko and have to hope Gutierrez's career year wasn't a fluke. Ohhh, but they added Milton Bradley, who's a clubhouse cancer. After their big 2, you have Roland-Smith, Snell and Fister. I can't wait to take the under in their Season total wins after everyone pushes it up to +160 under.

For the most part, they all pitched over their heads last year. Everyone is drinking the Mariners kool-aid, I just don't see it fellas. When you're hitting Jose Lopez, Ken Griffey, and Franklin Gutierrez 3-4-5, you're gonna have issues. That being said, they have 2 top notch starters and great defense. Their bullpen is overrated and their 3-4-5 of the rotation is scary bad.

The more I look at it, the more overrated I think this team is.
"After their big 2, you have Roland-Smith, Snell and Fister"
This is exactly why I wanted to inquire about the bullpen! What a shit show at the end of the rotation. All hail King Felix , but I expect Lee to come back to earth a bit this year, then after those 2 you got essentially nothing. None of those guys can get deep into games. Even if you get all you can ask for out of them, like 6 IP 2ER mabye, do they have the arms in the pen that can come in and put up some zeros? At 1st glace, I'd have to say no. Even AArdsma closing, he had good #'s last year, but he's still not really a guy I'd be trusting 100% like oh yeah, here comes Aardsma out of the pen for the save, this game is as good as over!!
Ichiro's the best, Gutierrez is the man, but the more I look, there just isnt much else to this team. I was drinking the kool-aid at 1st for some reason but now I'm spitting that ish out, FADE!! (In every game Felix isnt pitching)

Laughing at Rowland-Smith? Is that fair? He's 26 and he'll finally have a full season in the rotation. He should be FINE. And Fister, Snell and French should be able to hold down the 4-5 spots until Bedard comes back. When he's healthy he's as good as it gets. And Snell has the stuff. He posted a 4.20 ERA with the Mariners last season in 64.1 innings. He'll be fine as well for where they're slotting him.
As for the bullpen...they were really good last season. Sean White is a solid pitcher. Not a strikeout guy, but he will be fighting for that setup job. I really don't know much about how these guys pitch because I haven't followed them. Lowe and League will add to that fight for the setup role. I do know a bit about Brandon League as he was in the AL East. He is the fireballer that they may need and can blow people away. He does have comand issues though. If he can get that worked out...he could be a closer in his own right.
The real person to answer these questions for you is 3825. That's the Mariners' expert around here. He could clue you in on all this stuff.

well well well, this is a real exciting topic, hear this, NOBODY AND I MEAN NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE MARINERS!
I care about them a lot actually. Watching them and the Giants will make late night baseball a WHOLE lot more exciting when wanting to watch great pitching matchups. I bet a bunch of other people on this site, you know, the real baseball fans, also would love to watch the Mariners this season. Watching Ichiro and Figgins at the top of the lineup will be like poetry in motion. I can't wait to see how those 2 hit back to back.

Good points about the Mariners but don't discount them so fast. Having a great 1-2 SP rotation which has the potential to pitch a complete game each and every start...will do wonders for ANY BULLPEN. Think about it, if the bullpen only has to work on 3 out of the 5 days that's a recipe for success. If the team itself has (roughly) 70-75% chance of winning when Felix and Lee pitch...that's a big deal. In short, having a great 1-2 SP is ancient. Its lore goes back to Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. Question is what do you say after King and Lee...
As to Sam1... Every GM, every knowledgeable baseball fan and everyone whose eagerly watching the wide open AL west cares about the Mariners. The reason they care so much is because SEA is doing something unique and interesting with fielding. Its a moneyball thing so your probably not interested but the Mariners have had some success by finding value with fielding as opposed to offense or pitching.
So to answer your question...the Red Sox care because they ripped off Seattle's game plan 09 and decided to use it for themselves in 2010. The Yankees care because they stressed fielding this year over any other aspect. Just google Red Sox and fielding and you will learn. Let me help you out:

ryan-rowland smith will be pitching 3 and surprise everyone, prob about 15 wins this year, plus eric bedard will be good to go in july prob, hopefully he can stay healthy, we all know what hes capable of

I am in complete disagreement with the initial post in this thread. I think Seattle has a very solid bullpen and that Brandon League could potentially be one of the better set up men in the AL.
