Tim Lincecum is a two-time National League Cy Young Award winner. Yet many think he is having a down season and maybe with the lofty expectations of past perfection that he has posted this is a down season. Lincecum is 7-7 with a very good 3.06 ERA. He has been the victim of a lack of run support at times and has not been as perfect as prior seasons but all signs point to a huge outing by the Giants Ace tonight.
To
start, take look at this pitching match up, which pits the best pitcher on
a first place team that was won two Cy Young Awards and a World Series ring
against, the worst starter on a last place team.
Lincecum
has held three of his last five opponents to one run or less including seven
shutout innings against
Not
only will Linceum be pitching with extra rest but he has pitched very well
against
The Padres counter with right-hander Dustin Mosley who is 2-8 on the season and has not won since June 3. Mosley does have a 3.21 ERA this season but don't be fooled by that inflated number. Petco is the most pitcher friendly park in all of baseball and almost every Padres pitcher that has pitched in Petco since it opened has an ERA in the three's.
Mosley's numbers are indicative of a pitcher that should be 2-8. He has allowed at least three runs in five straight starts and has a very poor 54-32 strikeout to walk ratio. A strikeout to walk ratio of less than 2-1 always makes me look twice, and there is no reason to believe things are going to turn around for Mosley all of a sudden.
The
Giants rallied off Padres closer Heath Bell last night. After pitching in the
All-Star game and throwing a lot of pitches last night while blowing the save,
