32-27-3 ATS YTD...On to this Thursday Big East showdown of USF Bulls @ Cincy Bearcats...Ive had the opportunity to watch Cincy a few times on T.V. this year and I really like their team and what coach Kelly has done(although I pounded UConn vs them last week)...Great defense, solid special teams, an improving run game, great recievers, only question is @ QB which we will get to in this write up...USF brings a great QB, solid reciever corps, tough defense...Should turn out to be a good game IMO.
On to matchups QB: USF brings in steadily maturing Matt Grothe(6'0 213 Jr.) he has 1896 yards in the air 14TD's 5Int's and is completing 67% of his passes...He is showing alot of growth and maturity already matching last years TD total of 14(he had 14 INT's last year too,so he isn't turning the ball over as much either)...He struggled throwing 4 INT's vs. Cincy in a loss last year...This Cincy Secondary is just as stacked as last season and Grothe will have to play as close to perfect as possible and minimize mistakes, because this game offensively for his team is riding on his shoulders heavily!! On to the Cincy QB situation which I could do a whole write up about itself....You have Tony Pike(6'6 225 Jr.) and Chazz Anderson(6'0 205 r.Fr)...All I can say is they really miss injured SR. Dustin Grutza badly! On to Pike:if you read my write-up of last weekends plays I bashed Pike(who returned from a broken non-throwing arm) and predicted you would see Chazz Anderson before the game was over. And it happened.3rd quarter Pike was out...Now if you read my write-up I also said Pike #'s were misleading and that they were inflated due to his pounding on two MAC secondary's and he hadn't put up #'s like that against a worthy opponent.Last week @ UConn he struggled as he did vs. Oklahoma throwing 136 yards 1 TD 1 INT and completing just 37% of his passes!!!The wind did start to pickup in UConn which may have had some effect on those #'s .A few things I am going to note about Pike that I have noticed...1. is that he seems to be a more natural passer than Anderson on a good note..Now for the bad...2. He scrambles out of the pocket before it even collapses WAY TOO MUCH!!! Which leads to either a 1.sack,2.a bad forced pass,or 3.a scramble for hardly any yardage..He has no patience back there and doesn't wait for the play to develop and starts to get on the move way too quick fearing a sack and has to throw the ball away out of bounds or any reactions listed above!! On to Chazz Anderson he is young and shows promise and can move out of the pocket well...On a bad note he is young and makes bad throws which you can watch Coach Kelly's face and see the frustration...The mental errors are out of his inexperience but he does show promise..But my MAJOR GRIPE with Anderson is this....They have admitted they can't run 100% of their playbook with him in the game..He either doesn't know all the packages well enough yet or the coaching staff doesn't have the confidence with him in some of the packages, take your pick!!! Now I am trying to see who will start b/c Pike is banged up,but I summed up both QB's as best as i can, either way QB edge goes to USF!!
Running Game: USF, Mike Ford(6'2 225 Soph) isn't 100% ..A few friends of mine have told me he "should suit up" but either way he isnt 100%...His #'s are 289 yards 5 TD's and 4.1 per carry..Slightly down from last seasons 4.7 per carry..Grothe who is a decent scrambler also has 289 yards...i think either if Ford goes or not we will see a decent amount of former starter Ben Williams(5'7 200 Sr.) who has 151 yards 2TD's averaging 4.7 per carry...Cincy run game now which has developed nicely!!! Jacob Ramsey(5'11 218 Jr) is leading the pack with 394 yards 5.1 per carry and 0 in the endzone...John Goebel(6'0 208 Soph.) is also showing potential with 267 yards 4.9 per carry and 4 TD's..USF is only allowing 81 yards per game on the ground but it is essential for Cincy to stick with the run and be effective on the ground to be successful...Last week this duo only saw a combined 7 carries in the 40-16 loss @ UConn...They must see combined 20+ carries for Cincy to be successful!! Isaih Pead(5'11 185 Fr.) will also see some touches in the mix...With an unhealthy Ford the edge goes to Cincy.
Reciever corps: Both teams are stacked...USF is led by Jessie Hester(6'0 174 Jr.) who has hauled in 34 catches 350 yards and 3 TD's, they also have Taurus Johnson(6'1 204 Sr.) 28 catches 386 yards and 4 TD's...watch out for A.J. Love(6'2 195 Soph) with 4.4 speed who has 25 catches 307 yards and 2 TD's...Grothe has alot of talent to spread the wealth to as you can see, there are 4 other recievers with at least 10+ receptions!! Cincy is stacked too:Dominick Goodman(6'1 218 Sr.) he has a monster 4 catches 530 yards and 5 TD's!!!I love this kid and his counterpart Marshawn Gilyard(6'1 180 Jr.) who is averaging 15 yards per catch1!!!! He has 6 TD's and 587 rec. yards!! It's scary to think what this duo #'s would be with a steady consistent QB under center!!! Marcus Bennet(6'2 165 Soph) 20 receptions for 211 yards is also a threat...USF is definitely deeper but Cincy has the 2 better playmakers IMO
O-Lines Defense,Special Teams:Both O-Lines have given up 17 sacks thus far! USF is a little banged up and if healthy hands down have the better line..Keep your ears open to see if Mark Dile(6'4 309 Sr.) LT plays if he doesn't it can play a bigger impact than you think on this game....Defenses are stacked...USF expect to hear George Selvie(6'4 245 Sr.) who many teams have been double teaming and Tyrone McKenzie(6'2 235 Sr.) who is a monster @ SLB!..Cincy has big Terril Byrd(6'0 270 SR.) DT causing havoc up front and listen for WLB Andre Revels(6'0 225 Jr.) to make some big hits!!! But I love the CB duo for Cincy DeAngelo Smith(6'0 191 Sr.) and Mike Mickens(6'0 175 Sr.) both are glue-like cover corners and can make the big play.. Watch out for Smith making a big return in special teams,he is dangerous!!! Not only am I going to brag about this guy but wait for analysts tomorrow night, Cincy punter Kevin Huber(6'2 225 SR.) this kid can boom the ball!!! He will play an important role in field position in this game!!
Wrap it up, alot of questions and inconsistency on both teams in 2008...But I have my pick made up and IM sticking by it win or loss....im taking CINCY+2.5 .....I think they have a solid secondary that will tighten up on USF recievers and the front 7 will be able to pressure Grothe into some bad throws...Cincy is not as bad as last week's loss to UConn they hung in the whole game(actually winning @ half) and let it go the last 15 minutes...I admitt I am shaky with the QB play of Cincy but I am convinced Kelly has to pound the rock to his 3 RB's to stay alive in the game and he knows that...Gilyard and Goodman will make their plays but he must evolve the run game early and control the tempo and clock b/c USF is outscoring opponents 80-30 in the 1st quarter!!!I think USF was slightly and still over-hyped besides the Kansas win(KU isnt that solid this year and not the team from last year ) they lost to their only 2 quality oppopnents L'Ville and Pitt!! BOL guys!

That secondary will never shut down Grothe. He'll run up and down on them all game long and force CIN to make turnovers when they need the big play. Im going with USF all day. Its a no brainer pick and an easy big east victory.

nice detailed write up btw to start this thread...
but you said it yourself, the QB situation for UC is horrendous, at best. plus a short week to develop and hone 2 different gameplans?
check out this forum... by at least 8::2 i would say the vast majority of plays are on UC. i understand that most "numbers" are showing ~70-80% on USF but one always has to consider what the covers' board is saying also (at least I do) b/c me, you, all of us degenerates, aren't WE the public also? because certainly we can't ALL be "sharp" or "against the public", right?

you are totally right we are the public as well!...none of us on here are pro handicappers most of us are just your above average degenerate gamblers(though some of our records might be better than some "pro" handicappers out there)..But I agree we all cant be "sharp" or "against the public" you are 100% correct!

i wouldnt say horresnous..I would say it has it definite flaws right now as does the USF O-Line...Grothe maybe and IMO is one heck of a QB but if he isn't getting the protection up front(Mark Dile LT not looking like he' ll play) is going to play is a big concern in my eyes..5 sacks vs L'Ville last week, and this front 7 is just as or maybe even more talented!
