im 9-2-1 so far in college...ok lets start off by saying UNC hasn't won a game outside of North Carolina since '02..this game intrigued me from the second i saw it!
mismatch i notice is Rutgers D-Line vs UNC O-Line...Rutgers D-Line avg weight is 255 vs UNC avg O-Line weight is 302(4 of them starters from last year)....Rutgers HC Schiano is a little concerned saying "they are a very big physical group." this is bad news for Rutgers because if you can't pressure T.J. Yates he can scorch you with his VERY talented recievers Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate ...so Rutgers key to win is heavy pressure all day on T.J. Yates(which wont be easy)..becuase UNC running back Greg Little(converted from WR) 14 carries for 37 yards vs Mcneese State doesnt look promising but Little did average 5.1 yards per carry last year..They will need Little more involved and back to old form for a balanced attack
UNC coach Butch Davis expects Rutgers to blitz 40-45% of the game..Thats bad for UNC QB T.J.Yates??.well not exactly...The sophmore QB has experience against TOUGH D'S that like to pressure( East Carolina,Virgina Tech,South Carolina,Miami). The kid has cannon for a arm and 2 huge weapons in Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate who are as equally as dangerous Rutgers recievers Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood IMO...
UNC key to win is their front 7 stuffing the run and pressuring MIke Teel...This wont be easy but possible...Their front 4 are HUGE and this concered Rutgers coach when he said" there was no way to get his guys ready b/c there is nobody on his scout team or D-LIne with this size to practice against guys this size, btu said they have been coaching them through technique to face this big of a D-Line..UNC D-line average weight is 302.. yea thats right 302...they're big...Rutgers coach Schiano respect UNC linebackers as well saying they are BIG and move very well on the field(they weigh between 230-240)
Big question is can Rutgers rush through this BIG and PHYSICAL front 7??? They only averaged 3.1 yards per carry against a smaller Fresno State defense
To wrap this in-depth preview up...it comes down to who can have a more balanced attack and run the ball...Because we all know each team is going to pass with their weapons at recievers.
Which QB is more effective Mike Teel or T.J. Yates????
Teel has the experience edge on Yates, Yates is turnover prone throwing 18 interceptions last year(note. he was Freshmen and team was learning a new offense)
Teel threw 2 picks in his first game while Yates threw 1...Teel is a little overated IMO and Yates has cannon and used to tough defenses... IMO Rutgers has a better secondary eventhough they made some costly mistakes vs. Fresno State....UNC has2 sophmore Cornerbacks who both started last season facing a tough challenge going up against Britt and Underwood....ANd engouh with UNC barely beat Mcneese State, they were up 14-0 untill a lightning storm forced a hour and half delay...that messed their rhythm up
Who do I like... My book has UNC -5...and I may jump on that today...Im leaning toward UNC...and most likely will definitley play them...will they win for the the first time out of the Tar Heel state in 6 years, i cant say they wont but i wouldnt put my $$ on the ML..But im loving UNC +5...take all this info and place a wager and BOL!!!!! ill update this to let you know once I take em.

You have to remember, Fresno's O-line was also a lot bigger than Rutgers' D-line and Rutgers dominated them for one half of that game. Now did they wear them down in the 2nd half or did Fresno just adjust their playcalling while Rutgers stayed put with theirs?
Rutgers easily left 14-17 points on the field and I believe the biggest reason they were beaten was their inability to adjust after halftime like Fresno did.

there is something to be said about speed and not weight, rutger did keep a good fresno st off line in check for thhree quarters and mental mistakes from offense and special teams on rutgers part did them in, i expect them to adjust in this one at home

i dont know man Fresno St. gained 206 yards on the ground against them and averaged 5.1 YPC....Fresno St. O-Line averages 275 vs UNC 302...I hear ya Rutgers front 4 are quick but im telling you UNC O-Line are physical, and Schiano even said it yesterday..its going to be a dog fight in the trenches!

I just don't think you bet a team because their line outweights the other teams line!?! Horrible angle. If Rutgers beats Fresno last week do you have the same thoughts!?! How are UNC's DB's gonna fare against Britt and Underwood. Rutgers was two dropped passes away from being up 14/17 - 0 on Fresno. Rutgers had 369 total yard of Offense, and should have had 500+ if not for the dropped balls! Against a Fresno team that most are picking to beat Wisconsin this week!
On the other hand, you have a UNC team that had 386 yards of total offense against a I-AA school. I don't know if THEY had any dropped balls, or what MNEST D-Line weighs....but I don't really think it's gonna matter!
NC is all "hyped" up because they return 18 starters.....well....their returning 18 only beat Duke by 6 LAST YEAR, and had trouble w/ McNease State.
RUTGERS (for anyone who watched the game) let one get away against Fresno, and won't let this one get away from an (we suck balls this year) ACC team.
Butch Davis is a good coach, but it's gonna take more than 1 season to turn UNC around. They may have rushed for a ton against McSt.....(who wouldn't against IAA) but 15/26, w/ 2 tds and 1 int is unacceptable.)
Like the write up......I may be wrong about this one.....but I am on the other side!

hey goscots i didnt pick this pick just based on the size of the d-line vs o-line i just pointed that out as a mismatch...and if you look i did mention that rutgers has a better secondary and questioned how will UNC 2 soph. Corners will fare against Britt and Underwood....but i respect your outlook on the game bro and i do agree w/u that rutgers blew the fresno gmae...i guess well see thursday night what happens! BOL!

I don't comment a lot,ok never, but I thought I would add a little input. I was at the UNC McNeese State game and here are some thoughts. UNC came out with the thoughts that it was a scrimmage, it was very evident that even though McNeese was presenting them with an 8 man front, they wanted to run the ball. The UNC coaches seemed to have the mindset that as long as the game was in hand, they just wanted to keep it simple and get a few looks at some different sets. When they needed to open it up it was there. Call me a UNC homer, but I have heard this from several people after talking with coaches.
Also, McNeese State, I don't care what "division" they play, those guys are athletes. Good Athletes. Although they played a Div II school the next week, they did beat them 50 something to 14 or so (not precise but you get the drift) and apparently called off the dogs with 8 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
As far as Rutgers goes, I thought they got manhandled by a smallish Fresno State team. And no, football is not judged by size, BUT you can't coach speed and you can't coach size, and by the looks of it, compared to last year Rutgers is lacking considerably. AGAIN, compared to last year.
The greatest gains of improvement are made from week one to week 2 on any football team. So the question is who will improve more? I firmly believe you will see a different, wide open Tar Heel team on thursday night. Down field passing and more blitzing on D.
My only concern is that the corners that are already thin are a little banged up and the starting strong side end (the other thin position on the team) will not play.
I will gladly take the points and will probably bet the Heels ML. Hope this helps.

i appreciate your insight man being at the game ./and like u said mcneese played them with a 8 man front and they wanted to run the ball..Butch Davis could've had Yates blow that game open... plus you know you were at that game they were up 14-0 before the storm that had to throw them off....I totally agree about the Corners, I didnt know they were banged up(thanks), but they are going to have their hands full tomorrow both being young soph....BOL!

Rutgers lost badly to a good FresnoState team in their home opener two weeks ago as their poor defense gave up 422 yards at 6.7 yards per play. That’s surprising because Rutgers had a decent defense last year and they returned 8 on that side of the ball this year.North Carolina struggled to beat McNeaseState last week 34-27.I like Rutgers to get the win coming off a loss at home and coach Schiano is 24-17 ATS off a straight up loss at Rutgers.I’ll lean with Rutgers.

UNC is bigger...OK, I agree with that.. the rest I dont get..
Rutgers played a VERY GOOD Fresno St team week 1..Only down 3 1/2 way thru the 4th quarter.
McNeese St outgained, Out first downed UNC 22-13, led TOP 35-24. Yes, I read what was said...UNC was treating this 7 Point win over DIV 2 McNeese St like a scrimmage. I believe there is more to those numbers, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
And, can the Tar Heels all of a sudden learn how to win on the Road..? This is a big step for the Butch Davis era...are they ready..I dont think so.
