New to the forums, first post. I am trying to gauge what the spread will be for my Vols against the mighty Griz? I would love to get your thoughts on this. I read alot of threads in here and everyone in here is pretty sharp, so it makes sense this would be a good place to come for some CFB knowledge. Thanks.

I looked through Montana's history against BCS level competition, and it's pretty sparse. In the last ten years, they've played two games:
47-14 loss to Oregon (2005 in Eugene)
41-7 loss to Iowa (2006 in Iowa City)
That Oregon team was unranked at the time but climbed as high as #5 before finishing 10-2 and #13.
That Iowa team started out #17 before losing to Indiana, Minnesota, and Northwestern (among others) to finish 6-7.
Tennessee should be better than 2006 Iowa and worse than 2005 Oregon. So if that's all we have to go on, I'd say a margin in the low 30s sounds appropriate.

hey buddy, similar to oregon last year at -55 to portland state, the spread will be HIGH.....oregon was up 45-0 at the half in that game and won 69-0, i see tennessee having a HUGE advantage, especially between the trenches,
i would say based on tenessee's inept offensive production over the last 4 years, the spread might be smaller, but still probably about the same as last year when they played UT Martin and the number was Vols -38, they won 50-0
i could see -38 or anywhere down to -32 because the grizz are a respectable 1AA team

Or to put it another way, this Montana team is probably better than the Wyoming team that won in Neyland in 2008. Obviously, this year's Tennesse team is better than the 2008 team, but be careful if this number comes out in the 21-24 range. That might be too high

Okay, I don't want to seem like a flake, but I just realized I screwed up some of the numbers, and I think maybe this line will be 4 or 5 point higher than I originally calculated. So maybe it will be more like 24-28.

The Wyoming team was 111th and if this Montana team is around 12th in the FCS poll it looks good. The 08' Vols was the worst squad we've had in some 40 plus yrs. with a lame duck (couldnt pull any recruits anymore) coach in Fulmer. The 11' Vols are 180 degrees better. I appreciate the insight mws and your angle. You need all angles to make a justified decision. Thanks.

Grizzlies are coached by ex-Duck Robin Pflugrad...same O / tough D return 7/7 st off 7-4 disappointing season.....(3/5 OL + p,k)...missed play-offs for 1st time in 15+ years.....lose one of best RB's in school history....and both QB's....starter and captain hurt early....ex Duck J Roper finished .....but leaves....Nate Montana might be the guy if not suspended....all receivers return D brings back all 3 LB's....both DE's...DT.....and maybe nation's best CB .....(FCS)
picked to finish 3rd in Big Sky behind E Washington and Montana St...finished LY ranked #20.....LY Steele had Tennessee 35-40 pts better in his PR
always tread lightly in these games....unless you know /or suspect the FCS team will just play to not get hurt.....the ATS records week 1 have favored the big dog FCS team by nice margin last few years.......
The impediment to action advances action - what stands in the way becomes the way.

What book do you use? Depending on that answer will determine whether or not you can even play that one. I use 5dimes which offfers games between FBS and FCS schools, but some sportsbooks do not.

What about the fact that they have not traveled to the east in over 10yrs. Closest was Iowa and not in the dead of summer heat and humdity in Knoxville. I don't know.... 5hr flight for the first game, 2hr. time change and 110% humidity in front of 100,000 with an extremely green QB, whoever that may be. I will be curious to see the opening line.

Dont get me wrong here guys, I know I am playing devils advocate because of my obvious slanted perspective. So, dont think I am playing bumper cars with you. I love the discussion

Given that you are a UT fan, what do you think about the talk about super conferences in the future? Obviously, if it goes that direction, the SEC will be a conference adding teams and was just curious if you would have an issue with the SEC growing. Personally, I think we will see 4 16-team super conferences within the next 5 or 6 years.
