One team that is fascinating is Ole Miss. As recently as 2007 they were the worst team in the SEC (0-8). Houston Nutt turned things around in 2008 and the Rebels won their last 6 games (including a 31-13 pounding of LSU in Baton Rouge and an impressive 47-34 win over Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. But can the Rebels really be that good, or did they catch some teams by surprise last season? Although lots of star players return (including QB Jevan Snead) they did lose 2 first round draft picks to the NFL (Michael Oher and Peria Jerry) as well as a third round pick (Mike Wallace) and a late round pick (Jamarca Sanford). Four other players have now signed free agent deals with NFL teams, so it is fair to say that much of the talent has departed.
Will Ole Miss return to earth in 2009, or is this bunch for real? Any strong opinions?

would think that they would (return to earth).....but... 2 things ..... * schedule couldn't be any better.... road games are s caro.....vandy....auburn...and miss st...and memphis plus sc and vandy were teams they lost to last year...(should have beaten both ?)...avoid fla and georgia....non-conf games are memphis....SE louisiana...uab.....and N arizona !!!!! > easiest SEC schedule EVER ?? * when considering great run of last year....was a lotta luck involved ? (other teams .... lookahead....TO's) ?? .....> NO coulda been 11-1 (lost 4 games by 4 pts each or so )...last sec FG at wake.....outgained vandy 385-202 but 6 TO's.....ahead of s caro most of game...lost at alabama (12-1) by 4...... plus.....finished really strong....after fartin around with auburn (to this point Snead and offense so so).....> outgained most games destroyed ula mon 59-0 (more impressive than most think... and cost me $$$ > thinkin letdown....outgained lsu 409-215 (there)...miss st 461-30 !.....then ttech 515-469....(Snead 48-73 780yds 9/2 over last 3 games.....best of all ...covered last 4 games by an AVERAGE of 26 points !!......hopefully you got some of that $ SO ...may be poor team ATS....especially early...but wouldn't surprise me if they were 9-1 or so going into LSU < lose here....9-10 wins probable...11 not out of question.....maybe best NOT to win West ...(avoid NASTY revenge game with fla).....OL is only question mark...and have until oct 10 (alabama) ...to solve ...(think they handle sc and vandy).
The impediment to action advances action - what stands in the way becomes the way.

I agree that Hardy needs to have a big season, but they have 3 other DE's that could start for most teams. In fact, Hardy is behind Kentrell Lockett on the current depth chart. Lockett has been very impressive, and on the other side Marcus Tillman and Emanual Stephens are rock solid.
Overall I expect Ole Miss to struggle some with the high expectations and pre-season rankings. But if they can keep Snead, McCluster, Hardy and a couple of other key players healthy, then 10-2 might be realistic. I think the Thursday night game against S Carolina will be a difficult task early.

Ole Miss could go undefeated if they can win early road games at South Carolina and Vandy and build confidence. Assuming they can hammer Miss St, the only tough road game is @Auburn.
I think the Vegas season wins will be 8.5 and I think they win 9.

I think they come in with a lil too much credit for their own good, and not that they don't deserve it. What I mean by that is, the SEC is hard enough for a school like Miss, you don't need teams like Tenn or LSU playing them as the supposed "underdogs". Again, coming in as a top 10 team, you will also prob not get a lot of value with them @ home. Lucky for them they play on the road to start and won't get caught being lazy at home. I think they should not have more than 2 losses SU in the reg season (bama, LSU), however, ATS they might be a team I am taking the pts especially @ Home over valued.

Remember, they play both LSU and Alabama at home. Big advantage there. They are in a lofty position pre-season, and are going to have to live up to their reputation. Three out of their first 4 are on the road, which is good for them. If they can get past those games, including an away game at South Carolina, they should be in good shape to finish at 10-2 or better.

Some good opinions already offered on this one, but I look at it this way.
This is not a power program so losing those high draft picks will hurt them much more than say Gators or Bayou Bengals (not to mention Dawgs or Tide). As previously mentioned, the equalizer is that absurd schedule they concocted (Northern Arizona!!?? They should forfeit at least 1 scholarship for that[- ] ), so their SU record may not reflect it as much as one would anticipate. I agree that the ATS record may be negative this year as there should be major adjustments made by books (plus they'll be laying big numbers which they weren't giving last year).
Gotta give tremendous props to Nutt for coming in and changing the "culture" virtually overnight. Not sure how great a coach he is (or a recruiter for that matter) but has to be considered one hell of a motivator at the least.
The fact remains they seemed to play their best ball against the cream of the conference, as well as their bowl, and I still consider them "live" as any kind of dog (5-0 LY).

intel- I agree with you statement, but Uf was playing Citadel late season LY and The bayou Bengals had a directional LA team. So, apparently its becoming a trend. I don't know why, I do understand that with that hard a** conf . sched, you need a break, but it seems like it gives yourself a chance for a letdown.
Ad the problem with them, which I brought up, is , they should be undefeated most of the time, and since they are at home, will be giving pts, which means I might have to take the + number.

I Would Be Careful with Ole Miss..... I Like the Rebels... But They Are Not Sneaking up on anyone this year... I Look For a Good Season But Don't Forget The SEC West Still Runs Thru Alabama And LSU..

as far as potential goes....very interesting that ol miss only "top" team....not to be given odds to win BCS ???? (all places i've seen > maybe somewhere).........saw somewhere opened at 50-1 (somehow)......2 loss alabama or lsu plays fla in SEC title game .....and wins .......ol miss sittiing at home with 1 loss (COULD happen) ....possibly play in title game ??? ........vs a penn st maybe ??? < kick their ass too

If any of you can get an account at Intertops, a British outfit, you can get Ole Miss at 41-1. Otherwise, you will have to play them as part of a "field" wager. Mot of those I have seen are at 20-1, the same odds as Alabama and LSU have posted at many books.
As far as a 2 loss LSU finishing ahead of a 1 loss Mississippi, it cannot happen. LSU plays a complete and total cream puff non-con schedule, with a trip to Washington being their toughest game. If they lose two games, they will be conference games. Alabama is different. They can lose to Va.Tech, lose one conference game, but beat Mississippi and get into the SEC title game.

ED O.. was an excellent recruiter but is a horrible coach now he joins Lane Kiffin at Tennessee, ....
totally agee with you ...Nutt has done an amazing job in such a short time ...
BEST OF HEALTH, HAPPINESS,WEALTH, BLESSINGS and LUCK TO ALL !!

I would want 55-1 or better with Ole Miss to win the NC

I agree, there is no question Houston Nutt is a great motivator, but how much more difficult will that be the second time around? As mentioned many times, SEC teams will no longer be looking past Ole Miss. Do they have the talent and depth to compete (and beat) LSU and Bama? And how much respect will they get from the books? What will the points be vs Memphis in the opener? Will Ole Miss try to run up a big score when they are favored? They are definitely a "live dog" IMO.
