Terps go on the road Tuesday night to face an FSU team that looked like an NBA team when they dismantled UNC Saturday at home. I was shocked about that result for a couple of reasons. First, it was VERY high scoring for a FSU team and I thought under almost 150 would be a cinch. This is the same FSU team that has been terribly inconsistent and often struggles to score, plus plays great defense. Secondly, they took a very talented UNC team out of their game early, then drilled them as bad as I have seen UNC lose since Dougherty was the ass clown coach.
This makes the FSU/Terp game hard to evaluate. The Terps have been squeeking by less talented teams OOC and have now played three decent ACC teams fairly well but haven't faced the ACC's big boys yet. FSU looked great Saturday but I know that isn't them and I know they are inconsistent. I also know that a letdown is a real possibility. +12 is a tough line because I would have expected somethign around 9 but I guess this thing has some UNC effect in it.
The Noles rebound well as do the Terps but I'd guess we will be -4 to -7 on the boards Tuesday night. I'd also think that the Terps will have their hands full in the paint as FSU is more athletic than the Terps in the frontcourt right now. Bernard James will be a tough assignment for all of our inside guys and Len is not playing strong or energetic enough right now to cause James to lose sleep. This is another team that we are 7-3 against in the last 10 games head to head and our fortune on the road at FSU has been solid of late. If the FSU guards shoot like they did Saturday, we will get beat by 15+. I am not sure they can shoot that well again but that doesn't mean the Terps won't struggle to score on their own. The Terps are prone to extended scoring droughts, selfish offense by Stogs and poor decision making at the offensive end. I am also not sure Mosley has all of a sudden become a 14+ point/game type player for us after almost four years in College Park. Len is going to struggle to score as the Noles will crowd hi with big bodies in the paint and since he scores 95% of his points on dunks and layups, scoring could be tough to come by for him in Talahassee.
In the end this boils down to whether or not the first half the Terps played agianst Wake, the fairly complete game at NCSU and the defense played the entire game against GT are for real. If they are, then this Terp team is improving faster than I expected and we can stay close tomorrow night. If it isn't for real and FSU plays half way decent, this one could get out of hand. I think the Terps can stay fairly close and score enough in what I think will be a fairly low scoring game to cover but I am not going to play a side becuase I feel more confident in the under. Again, FSU is known for an inability to score and I don't know that they've all of a sudden solved that. Thrown in the Terp scoring droughts, the two day turnaround time, the travel, and knowing that Stoglin is due for an absolute nightmare shooting night and I think this one stays lower scoring.

The more I look at this, the more I think the Terps cover. Going to bite and add what looks like a very popular public play:
Play: Terps +12
Part of my thinking here is that if you play the under, you have to also believe a low scoring stays fairly close. This play then comes a hedge of sorts. If the Terps cannot stay competitive on the glass and if their shot selection starts and stays poor, I take the chance of losing both. That's a chance I'm willing to take.

Seems like a reasonable under play, especially because I don't think the terps will score much tonight at all.
It's a clear letdown spot for FSU, but they are screwed inside and on the boards and I'm sure Leonard Hamilton will put length on Stoglin and that will limit him. I can't imagine FSU's offense playing like it did on Saturday, but maybe they're starting to click considering they had a good win @VT when they owned the Hokies from start to finish. I may go Maryland team total under if I can get one

"My" Terps? You been following them since '70 like I have? I was abig donor in the '80;'s when one of my nephews went there, during the Buck Williams / Al King era, didn't miss a home or ACC tourney game for 14 years up until around '94 when I was spending a lot of time in Europe. I am in the camp that the improvement is not happening as quick as it may appear or we would like. FSU won't have a shooting performance like they did against UNC for at least 10 years, if ever again, but I don;t feel good about this spot. Terps still too soft, not sure what I think about Turgeon yet. No play for me but hopefully I get surprised.

Not to be one of those weenies that corrects people's spelling but I know Matt Doherty form basketball camps and I know he gets particularly peeved when people assume his name is spelled the other way. Not that he;s reading these boards...

Yeah, my Terps......or at least they have been for the almost 41 years of my life. Sounds like you may be older and maybe have a few years on my.
As for your comment on "being from the camp that improvement is not happening as quick as we'd like" I am unclear on that. Gary left the cupboards bear as you and I both know. Soem of that was due to a lack of recruiting effort, some simply because we lost some good recruits when he retired. Bare nonetheless. Turgeon comes in and gets a team that has limited ACC ability on it in my opinion. Yes, the upside is big but the here and now is inexperienced or limited in the traits we need to win NOW. All of that being said, Turge has been in College Park about 6 months so I am unsure what the "not happening quick enough" crowd thinks we should be doing at this point to prove the big turnaround you guys expected. I personally think we've done a bit better than I thought we would at this point. I would of course like to see more of the signature D he is known for but I am willing to give him a couple full seasons before I start faulting him. Help is on the way right away in the 2012 recruiting class but you have to be reasonable with your expectations. You should know that as an old timer. We survived Len Bias, Bob Wade, etc. and we will be very competitive again soon........maybe not in three months of a season but soon.

Terps went MOST of the first half without their two most important frontcourt players and they are down by 3. Terps can win this if the second half goes the same way.

This scoring is bullshit. FSU has been painful to watch offensively since Hamilton got there and all of a sudden they are pushing the tempo and not having a problem scoring??? Didn't they score like 14 points in the first half at home against Princeton?

was a tournament game in a ballroom. lots of teams had trouble scoring in that environment
