According to someone on the Sabre message boards who has access to Mike Scott’s Facebook, the big fella’s current status is: “high ankle sprain. it’s all bad.” Yikes. The dreaded high ankle sprain – much more severe than its counterpart from further south – is an injury that can keep a player out for weeks at a time. The good news? That this didn’t happen right before the ACC schedule. We’ve only got one game (Auburn) in the next two weeks, and the four games after Auburn that close out 2009 should all be winnable without Scott in the lineup if worst comes to worst.
This is a big blow to this team if he has to miss any games. Mike Scott has been the team’s MVP and the best player on the floor over the first seven games, supplementing his 13 points and nine rebounds per game with being the linchpin of the offense on the post and taking the opponent’s best big man on the defensive side. Most of our best possessions this season have come after Scott gets at least one touch. We’ll have to figure out an offensive identity all over again if he’s out.
There could suddenly be plenty of forward minutes available. I’d love for that to lead to Jamil Tucker getting back into the swing of things. Jamil’s a different sort of forward from Mike – a perimeter player, you can’t really run your post game through him – but he’s still a legit 6'9” with three years of experience. If he can round into shape and get his mind right (he’s practicing, and was on the bench in street clothes against Penn State), he could step in to some guaranteed minutes if Mike ends up missing some time.
Will Sherrill will probably end up getting a lot of any available minutes. He’s shown a sharp basketball acumen this season – he’s got a keen eye for the extra pass and I’d guess that no one on our team has as many deflections or hustle plays – but still appears to be running in slow motion and has a penchant for fouls that lead to three point plays.
This’d also be a nice time for Tristan Spurlock to show he’s ready for some prime time action. In his limited minutes, Tristan has reminded me of the freshman version of Mamadi Diane – he always seems to be playing a little bit faster than he needs to. He’s also shown some nice, springy athleticism and decent touch on his jumper.
Anyway, hopefully this turns out to just be much ado over nothing, and Mike is back up and full speed by the game on the 19th against UNC Wilmington
