Clemson is extremely soft and were badly exposed last year. They made South Carolina look like an offensive juggernaut before getting 70 dropped on them by WVU. If you watched that Orange Bowl mess, WVU had 63 in early 3rd quarter and it was documented that Clemson's players were asking them to go easy. WVU could have broken the century mark with ease.
CU hired Venables (who was being pushed out at OU, admittedly for a brother Stoops) to cure the ills, but lost their top-4 defensive players. Venables will probably improve the scheme but I think Frazier will run at will. The next QB Clemson stops will be the first.
Auburn, on the other hand, is breaking in two new coordinators. Van Gorder, IMO, is one of the best in college and at UGA put out nasty defenses. But this is his first game, although he has a ton of talent to deal with, unlike Venables. Auburn's offense with Loeffler should be basic but against Clemson that's all that's needed. Their gut is very soft, especially with players who ask for mercy.
Clemson is without Watkins but can still make noise on offense. Troubling, however, is their offensive line. Again, starting with GT last year, they couldn't block anyone and Boyd, not fleet of foot, ran for his life. The offensive line will be no better and possibly worse.
If Clemson can block, and cobble together a defense, they will win. I think, after seeing the end of their season last year, that they were exposed and a formula came about on how to beat them. I also think Auburn's coaches are smart enough, and they have the talent, to do the same.
And until an ACC team steps up against an SEC team, the trend will continue.
Not very scientific, but I'm taking Auburn and I think they win by 6-10.
