Would love to hear from others......list the best advice you ever received regarding sports betting (any sport)
I''ll start off with a couple and will frequently update with more down the road.........
1.If you cannot handle losing get out of the BIZ right F***IN now. If you cannot handle a big loss or an extended losing streak you will NEVER win in the long term. If you don't control your emotions regarding a loss you will fall victim to chasing and a host of other bad habits. YOU CANNOT get emotionally attached to your plays. Plain and simple.
2.If you DO let a loss get to you emotionally it will cloud your judgement regarding the next play and will force you to do things you wouldn't normally do like: pick a huge dog to try and win your $ back right away OR bet a game that is next on TV just because your so pissed off how you lost that last game you want redemption right now OR perhaps you double maybe triple your next play to win what you just lost and more. OR here is a really fatal one PLAY A TEASER. We've ALL done it......you lose a bet then say fuck it..... I'll take the Patriots and the Over only to have one part of the play win. I could go on and on here but I think you understand

forget your losses, learn from your wins, and do not chase....this should ensure a long betting season with low stress levels and alot of entertainment. When you show discipline, luck tends to show up on your side.

4. don't try and pick every game on a 16 game slate and wonder why you're not profiting........be selective. pick and choose only a couple. Every bet you are exposing your money to your book. WHY overexpose it. this is not the stock market, you don't need to diversify to protect yourself

best advice i ever received was at the Stardust, from a guy who was probably in his 70s... i was in my early 20s... and at the time i really didn't understand what he meant, but it has stuck with me, and i now realize the genius of it... he told me...
"you know what your problem is? you want to win every game!"
most people will say... that's stupid! of course you want to win every game... but what he was saying was...
stop approaching games with the mentality of looking for "locks!"... there is no such thing... because when you take this approach, every game you lose is a killer, and will effect how you handicap going forward... instead, be in it for the long haul... know you will lose some games, but don't let that knock you off your horse... if you know what you're doing, your handicapping will win out in the long run, despite the fact that you will occasionally have a bad stretch...
also, this advice keeps you from ever "loading up" on any 1 game...
i think this advice would apply to a good 90% of the bettors on these forums, if they can grasp it's wisdom... heed these words and it will help you as a sports bettor, in the long term...

4. I have a few friends who are "big time higher ups" in the casino/sports book biz and I will tell you what they have told me straight up about parlays/ teasers and 2nd half plays:
parlays/teaser bets along with 2nd half bets are the 2 most profitable aspects of action the books receive on any given action.
Teasers are usually a chase bet.... 2nd half plays are usually a chase bet too.......books know this and offer them everywhere all the time. They are HUGE moneymakers for books. If you see that your bet is losing going into half time don't try to get your money back right away....take a deep breath, realize this one is a loser and wait for another play another day. I'm not saying you'll NEVER win on a teaser OR 2nd half play but the odds are against you.

Some of the best bets are the games you wind up laying off on because you are so unsure. When you then see the bet you would have made lose, you feel like you just saved yourself money. You don't have to bet every day. It's not about frequency. Pick your spots.
Just because Philip Rivers and Norv Turner just pissed you off for being their typical choking selves, that doesn't you should load up on the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl later that night. You may win but more often than not, betting a game you would not normally bet out of anger due to a prior losing bet is a surefire way to lose money in the long run.

You are so right. I would love to be able to figure out my lifetime record on 2nd half bets. Can't be worth it over the long haul. Really have to pick spots for the 2nd half involving games you didn't bet so that your judgment is less clouded with chasing.

In my opinion, you should be absolutely scared shitless of the other side in every bet you make. The second you think you've made an easy bet and don't see any way it loses, that's when you've likely made a shitty wager.

5. It's already been alluded to earlier in this thread but the single BIGGEST ADVANTAGE you have against any book is your ability to NOT place a bet ****PLEASE UNDERSTAND HOW POWERFUL**** this is.
Realize....the books do not have this luxury ....they MUST take action on every game, they have to, it's what they do. We as the bettor can pick and choose our spots. It's called SPOT BETTING and it's what I do and have been very profitable doing it. Not playing a game is someimes the best play. Look at it as a win if you lay off a game and your selection does not come in. You just saved yourself some $$$$$ .I know there have been games where I've thought.....holy fuck would it suck to be a bookie on this game when you just absolutely know the colts are gonna cover and everyone and their dog is pounding the colts. Poor books HAVE to take the action or else they would be outta biz if they said "nope, this game is a gimme were not taking anymore bets on the Colts, all they can really do is limit the bet amount(which they do all the time ) thats why it's good to have several books to place wagers when you want to pound a game into oblivion

6.If you're unsure about a play and you just CANNOT layoff the game, you ABSOLUTELY have to play it.....go with your first instinct. You WILL be right right more often than not.Period !!
On tuesday you initially liked the steelers but by sunday morning you had changed your mind to the jets because of some bullshit you read. Then that afternoon you're TOTALLY pissed off by the second quarter watching the steelers laying it to the Jets 24-0
