here is one problem i have with this discussion...
there are people who feel like they got screwed over because Pitt didn't cover the spread on that play...
ummm... did you happen to notice that Pitt was not covering for even 1 second of this game? you made a bad bet... period... get over it... you never deserved to win that game, regardless of the rule...
Listen shithead, its not a bad play if the refs weren't in on this. Every time Pitt did something good in this game they got flagged! so its kinda hard to win a game when u have over a hundred yards in penalties and ur opponent only has 5 yards. And for them to overcome all the BS from the refs and still win and actually cover is amazing to me. Their def was not enough evidence to overturn that call so the only way it wud be was if the ref had a reason to, which he did prob about 50k so don't tell us we made a play!!!

IF YOU BET THE SHITTY STEELERS YOU KNEW YOU WERE DEAD WITH 20 SECONDS LEFT IN THE GAME. YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXPECTED THE COVER. WHO REALLY F-ING SAT THERE AND SEE GEE IF THE CAN GET THE CHARGERS TO SCREW UP THE LATERAL IN THE BACKFIELD MAYBE WE CAN GET THE TD TO COVER. ALL YOU DEGENRATES WHO SAT THERE AND THOUGHT THAT IF YOU HAD HALF A BRAIN SAID TO YOURSELF "YEAH BUT EVEN IF THE GET THE CHARGERS TO SCREW UP IN THE BACKFIELD PITT WILL JUST FALL ON IT AND WE STILL WONT COVER. NO WAY YOU COULD SIT THERE AND SAY YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO THE COVER IF YOU BET PITT. STOP BITCHING PULL UP YOUR PANTIES AND ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES...BUT THIS ISNT EVEN A PUNCH THE STEELERS WERE NOT NO WAY IN HELL GOING TO COVER BECAUSE PITT IS SUPPOSED TO JUST FALL ON THE BALL INSTEAD OF ADVANCING IT RISKING ANOTHER POSSIBLE FUMBLE. THE RIGHT PLAY IS TO FALL ON IT ASSURING SD WITH NO POSSIBLE CHANCE AT ALL OF ANYTHING POSITIVE. POLAMALU IS A DUMB F--K
FOR NOT FALLING ON IT. HIT IN TEH HEAD TOO MANY TIMES AND SO ARE YOU IF YOU THINK PITT DESERVED TO COVER!
Listen F@*k stick if u watched that game then u'd realize that Pitt should of been winning by alot more than what the spread was if it wasn't for crooked officials!! Almost double their yardage, 15-1 penalties in favor of SD, and if it wasn't for a BS pass int call that was about 20 yards over his head and completly un-catchable the Chargers wud only have 3 points in this game so i think we capped this game right but theirs nothing you can do once your on the wrong side of a fix. ok i'm done.

The first such score in 12,837 NFL games was in jeopardy when Troy Polamalu returned an errant lateral 12 yards for an apparent touchdown on the final play. The play was overturned on review—it was called an illegal forward pass—and the 11-10 final was restored.
After the game, referee Scott Green said the officials realized afterward the touchdown should have counted, though it wouldn’t have affected the result.

I am never betting NFL again. I loaded up on NBA last week all to have it crash on this one stupid game. Thanks Green. Can you contact sportsbook for me?

Warblade, you're a pretty sharp guy (i've seen your posts before), but you have to be smoking something... there doesn't need to be a flag to review an illegal forward pass... what are you thinking, exactly? any play that involves a lateral can be reviewed to verify the play went backwards... think about it... if there is an illegal forward pass, and the refs MISS IT, there won't be a flag on the play... it is up to the review booth to overturn the MISSED call...
honestly, the most baffling part of all of this is why the ref would admit he missed that call afterward... that makes no sense... it only stirs the pot unnecessarily, because if you really watch that play, and freeze it first at the point it leaves LT's hand, and again when it reaches Chambers, there is no controversy at all... it leaves the 25, ends up at the 26... illegal forward pass...
no idea why the ref would admit he was wrong when he wasn't... and even if he was it makes no sense...

2 - Tomlinson completes an illegal fwd pass to Chambers.
3 - Chambers essentially fumbles the ball backwards.
4 - Palomalu recovers the fumble and scores a TD.
5 - The refs rule TD.
6 - The booth reviews the play, and the ref subsequently says: "Illegal foward pass. It kills the play. There is zero time on the clock. The game is over."
There are a number of things that need to be addressed here.
1 - I believe the Tomlinson illegal fwd pass was in fact illegal.
2 - The NFL rulebook states that an illegal fwd pass is a penalty, not a dead ball situation.
3 - The NFL rulebook states that a defensive player can, yes, *can* advance a fumble, even inside 2 minutes.
4 - This is the most important one: The last play of the game is nullified (killed) on an offensive penalty, except in certain situations such as change of possession.
Number 4 is very important because I think this is where the mistake occurred. I think the booth/ref are saying that the penalty created by the Tomlinson illegal fwd pass nullified the play. That is the incorrect call because change of possession overrulles the play nullification.
This is the nature of the bad call and why it should have been a TD. The big question is, did the ref remember that a change of possession on the last play of a game in which a penalty occurs, does *not* nullify the play? Who knows?
AHA! i think someone just got to the bottom of this... very nice Tuttle... i think you may be right!
the correct call should have been illegal forward pass (penalty), but no dead ball since it never hit the ground... therefore, Pitt should have the opportunity to decline the penalty and uphold the play...
so THAT is the mistake that the ref made and admitted to later... he actually ruled it that way after the review (penalty declined... TD stands)... and then corrected himself (incorrectly)... what made it even worse is that his mic was off when he made the (incorrect) correction, so nobody knows what he said...
thanks Tuttle... i now understand the controversy... it WAS an illegal forward pass, but that doesn't kill the play...

Man why do they have these stupid rules in existence? "You can only throw the ball backwards 3 times; however, the 4th time you have to scratch your nuts and sing amazing grace before it hits the ground"

If it was the right call, why did the officials apologize after the game and state that Pitt should have been credited with a TD. For those who think the call will change, dream on!! That would cause utter chaos in the sports-betting world, small time and big time betting

There was no flag on the play. So, how can the booth, charge an illegal forward pass.
The replay official job is to overturn or confirm a call on the field. The call on the field was a touchdown. That is the only play, the replay official can review
There was no flag for an illegal forward pass, therefore that was consider a missed call, and not a reviewable one.
That was an openly rigged game, and Steelers' backers was on the wrong side of the fix.
End of discussion.
You are completely wrong in your reasoning. Just bc no flag was thrown the play isnt reviewable? We're not talking holding or PI here...official judgement calls which are not reviewable. But just like the Music City Miracle and the Eli play against the Eagles a couple weeks ago, a play with questionable forward/backward laterals/passes is 100% reviewable. The booth upstairs had every reason to review the play...what does a flag being thrown have to do with it? There was no challenge flag or yellow flags for the music city miracle play but they took a look at it, and confirmed the ruling on the field. Anytime you have a lateral involved def/spec team TD scored on the last play of a game no matter the score the upstairs booth will be taking a look bc the NFL is anal about getting everything exactly right.

Absolutely, Completely and Utterly FALSE statement
HERE IS HOW IT ALL GOT MIXED UP FOLKS:
Read Tuttleberry's post above...he is 100% correct and on point.
What happened in my opinion is that after looking at the play this exchange happened:
Ref 1: 'The second pass was an illegal forward pass'
Ref 2: 'I didnt think so but if thats the case the second pass hit the ground therefore its dead'
The language of the 'second' pass is what threw everything in the group...the guy who reviewed the play is calling LT's pass the second pass (Rivers was the first) and then at least one of the other officials thought the official who watched the play meant the Chambers pass was the second pass, and then they said that one hit the ground. The confusion on whether or not Rivers' pass was included in the verbage is how I believe everything got screwed up. If LT's illegal forward pass had touched the ground the play should have been ruled dead, but the pass that touched the ground wasn't an illegal forward pass. Confusing which pass was called 'second' while huddling at the end of the game knowing that everyone was going to be bitching either way is what caused the whole problem. But people have to stop saying the play shouldn't have been or even worse couldn't have been reviewed because there were no yellow or red flags...thats just wrong.

1) I have a DVR on my TV with Verizon Fios and I replayed the play ten times. I think we all agree it WAS an illegal forward pass from Tomlinson to Chambers, but that isnt the point nor should it have affected the outcome of the play itself.
2) On an illegal forward pass, IF and only IF it hits the ground, it is a dead ball. If NOT, then its just a FLAG and the play resumes. What pisses me off is that the ref knew that Pitt could decline the penalty and take the TD, which is WHY HE SAID IT AFTER THE FUCKING REVIEW took place. He came back out, said there was an illegal pass, said that Pitt declines the penalty, and that it is a TOUCHDOWN and threw his hands up. Then all of a sudden after further discussion amongst the refs they think its a dead ball. Bottom line KNOW THE FUCKING RULES if that is your job.
3) Illegal forward passes are reviewable so it doesnt matter whether or not a flag was thrown, for example a coach can throw a RED FLAG to review this at any point during the game obviously not inside of two minutes if the refs miss the call.
3) What cracks me up about this is they had roughly FIVE minutes in discussion time between the refs and booth review time. You mean to tell me that after probably 5-10 people talked about this play for a period of 5 minutes they got it wrong because of not KNOWING THE FUCKING RULES!!!!! This is a FUCKIN JOKE!!!!
4) Then immediately after the game to cover their ASSES, the ref says they made a mistake, give me a fucking break!!!!!!!
5) All my life I was the person that said there is no way the NFL is fixed and that all of the people that claim this are just sore losers and suck at betting the NFL, LOL, but I make money and am not one of those people. This is bullshit!!!!
6) For any of you assholes out there that say suck it up and Pittsburgh was a bad bet. Meet me in Atlantic City, NJ and I will take $2100 out of your pocket and walk away because that is EXACTLY HOW THIS FEELS.

I wonder if ref. SCOTT GREEN has taken out any life insurance because this utter incompitance is enough to finally send someone over the edge.
For a 3100.00 swing i could almost be considered a candidate but for people who lost hundreds of Ks and an overall swing of probably around a 100 million dollars worldwide when you include sports lotteries and such, MR. SCOTT GREEN MAY NEED A BODY GUARD FOR THE NEAR FUTURE, AT LEAST!!!!!!!!!!

NOT even a STEELERS FAN, but you have to admire the effort of that Tazmanian Devil Polomalu. In this era of players that don't even know the rules ( ie- Donovan McNabb ) and wideouts who take plays off ( ie- Moss, TO ) and cornerbacks who only defend the pass and NOT make tackles ( ie - McDonald, Browns ) this guys out there giving 110% on the very last play of the game. He decides to sit back 20 yards downfield ( like too many safties ) and this thread doesn't even exist. His determination and EFFORT made this happen.

you know that the NFL wont comment about this game, and thats why they turned the game off ASAP when the refs were trying to figure wtf is going on.
JUST KEEP YOUR LOSING TICKETS FRAME THEM, AND JUST REMEMBER THAT WAS THE DAY THAT YOU WATCHED ANOTHER PITTSBURG FIXED GAME (besides the seahawks vs steelers super bowl win when the refs fixed that game as well with their bullshit calls)
GL with everyone this coming week. hopefully we wont see anymore of these kind of games.

my god ppl get over it.....shit happens deal with it...stop acting like a bunch of spoiled little kids and accept reality.
Eddy - Here's a scenario, a guy gets robbed. Do the cops tell the victim to get over it? Because shit happens and just deal with it.
If you don't want to hear people complain find another thread. When you came into this thread, did you think everyone was going to suddenly say "Oh well, shucks, darnit all to heck anyway." Get real man

If you disagree, BEFORE you comment... Think about the last time that a "backward pass" (or lateral) was dropped by a receiver when the QB thrrows it directly to him from the snap (typically a screen). I am sure you can remember at least once where a defender picked it up and scored.

LISTEN THE NEW YORK POST HAD A BIG ARTICLE IN THE PAPER THIS MORNING ABOUT IT AND ITS THE WRONG CALL THEY MADE AND THAT THE NFL WILL PROB CHANGE THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME TO THE CORRECT SCORE (17-10 o 18-10) BECAUSE THE SCORE HAS MAJOR TIEBREAKER IMPLICATIONS......
