I work in the accounting department that has 5 employees not including the Controller, who is the head of the department. Two of my co-workers recently resigned in a recent 2 week period..That leaves us with only 3 employees in the dept. The controller didn't want to replace the 2 co-workers, so he decided to dump all the workload on me and my other co-worker. He didn't dump the work to the third co-worker because he is buddy with him. They are both old and about the same age, so he is playing favoritism. Anyway, the controller told me and my other co-worker to accept the extra workload or else he will fire us. Isn't that a threat againt us? Can I take it to HR and have HR do something about the asshole controller?
Also, i recently requested paid time off (PTO) for a couple of days, but the controller rejected it because I didn't give a reason why I want to take a couple of days off. This is my PTO, I don't have to give a reason! I have proper backup, so the work is being done by my backup while I'm gone...so there is no worries about work getting back logged. Can I go to HR and have HR grant me the couple of days off?

you can got to HR but it's your word against his. if the other guy also puts in a complaint you may have a better chance. if all else fails, bake the boss and his pal a cake and slip in some ex lax. at least you'll get get in some laughs while you work your ass off.

HR will probably have a "stonewall" answer, meaning they'll say something like, "Oh, all the departments are going through this and we know you work really hard and we'll try to make sure you get some support." <-- Translation: Please just quit bothering me about this crap.
However, not all companies are the same, so at least give it a shot.
As far as the unfairness of it all, unless you work in a contract state (you don't, I believe, since there's only like two states like that) or are under a contract, you have no recourse. They can fire you for any reason they like, or for no reason at all. You'd never find a lawyer to take your case if you decide to take legal action.
Good luck rockdog. I hate hearing about stuff like this and always root for the working man to be treated fairly. You obviously are not being treated fairly right now.

Gotta love these Corporate Fucks who feel they can screw people without suffering any reciprocal consequences. Pay a crack addict $1000 to break his legs with a baseball bat.

If I was a betting person, this guy is probably only telling half the story. I'm sure the Controller would have a slightly different point of view (trust me, I've mediated hundreds of these situations and the truth is almost always in between).
Here is what you do:
Re. PTO, what does the policy say? Check it and if your request meets the policy requirements, just approach your boss and say, "I checked the policy and it appears my request meets all of the requirements of the policy....and I have made arrangments for my work load to be covered. Can you tell me why you are not able to approve the time off for me?"
If he says, "you won't tell me what it's for," then you can just tell him the policy doesn't require that (if it does NOT).
IF this doesn't resolve the situation, I would say, "I'm sorry, but this doesn't seem right to me. Would you be willing to stop by HR together so they can clarify if the policy is being applied correctly here?" If he says he doesn't want to do that, then tell him you feel like you need to yourself because you're not understanding why he hasn't been able to approve your time off considering you met all the policy requirements.

Never go crying to HR without at least trying to address it with your manager. It's like going to the general without discussing with your superior officer.
Just be matter of fact. Not accusatory. Just ask questions and tell him you don't understand. Make him explain rather than just saying, "you can't have it off because you won't tell me what it's for."
As for the work load, that is more complicated (but I've dealt with that issue hundreds of times as well). I'll have some thoughts on that after I get back from a meeting.

Before you go to HR remember one thing. There number one priority is to protect the companies interests. If your boss has been around sometime chances are he knows the HR person and the HR person will side with him because he is upper management. I had a similar issue, Nothing was being done about one of my immediate supervisors incompetence. I approached my boss about it 50 times. She said she is in contact with her boss about this and it is in his hands. Well fast forward 6 months later. I had reached my limit. Instead of going to HR, ( the HR guy has a known history of not responding to complaints and always sides with upper management). I filed a detailed report to the Ethics department. I received one email back saying it takes time for an investigation. that was 7 weeks ago. I am sure my complaint got forwarded to the HR guy who did nothing. They finally came in to fire this individual last week, she made the threat of a lawsuit, and now they are transferring her to another dept. I have been doing this person's work for the last 9 month's, and her incompetent predecessor's for 7 months. Now I am being told she isn't being replaced, and I have already been told I most likely won't be receiving a raise this year ( I am supposedly capped out). I work for a major US company who has raised the Quarterly dividend 30% this year and just reported record earnings. To boot my boss's incentive is already at 12,000 dollars after 4 months. I am not eligible for bonus and she now does not have to share it with the anyone now since that other women got transferred. I am at my wit's end. I had my resignation letter all typed out yesterday to hand in and was talked out it by a friend. After 13 years with the company and only missing 1 days work in that time it makes my stomach turn to walk in the building. The problem is I have been looking for another job for at least 2 months and nobody is hiring. I want to just walk in, hand in my letter and tell them to stick it up there ass. I could survive a year without working but savings would be gone and you get lazy when you don't have a job.

Hey guys, I talked to a staffing agency on Friday and they are working on getting me a new job. Once I get a new job, I'm resigning from my current job immediately without giving 2 weeks notice or 1 day notice for that matter.
The only way I'm going to stay on is if my boss leave the company or just change his ways, which both will never happen. My boss has been with the company for 5 years and I have been with the company for 2 years. I have been dealing with this crap for 2 years now and it has reached the boiling point. My boss has always made it a hostile working environment for me and my other co-workers. No point in talking to HR because the VP of Human Resources is friends with my boss. As a matter of fact, I saw the 2 of them eating lunch together in the lunch room the other day.
Should I report my boss to his boss? which is the Vice President of Finance.
